On a very very windy afternoon both teams struggle to get the ball under control.
An unusually defensive 3-4-3 formation saw Hibs struggle to create many chances. The extremely challenging conditions created by strong gusting wind making it very difficult for either team to create much good football. Over the course of the 80 minutes Hibs only had 8 attempts on target very very unusually low for them.
Things started slowly with Hibs first attempt coming in 4 minutes following good play from Shannon M, Mhari and Chloe. Mhari’s attempt going wide. In 10 minutes a fine corner form Chloe was met by Megan K who headed wide.
Frustration at lack of progress was evident as Chloe attempted a spectacular shot form 45 yards. In 17 minutes a good interchange between Mhari and Shannon T on the left released Ria whose fine strike went narrowly past the right hand post.
It took until 24 minutes however for Hibs to get their first shot on target. Seeing Chloe free just outside the box Nic intelligently and quickly took a freekick releasing Chloe to run through and beat the keeper. 24 minutes 1-0 Hibs.
1 minute later inspired by her goal Chloe hit a rocket freekick towards the top right hand corner, only to meet a fine save form the Bonnyrigg keeper.
There were few further chances in the first half, Hibs seemingly reluctant to use their normal width.
Two chances did fall in the last two minutes of the half a good ball from Shannon M was picked up by Mhari who squared the ball across the box for Kirsty who in her normal robust manner skelped the ball goalward this time however saved by the crossbar. On the stoke of half time excellent anticipation by Livi who pounced on indecision in the Bonnyrigg defence and stole the ball from between two defenders and knocked the ball past the despairing keeper. 40 minutes 2-0 Hibs.
Half Time 2-0
The second half started with the gale unabated this half however assisting Hibs. Hibs did start brightly with 3 opportunities in the first 5 minutes. The first opportunity came from a cross which found Livi in space at the far post as she was closed down she took the chance a bit too early hitting the ball over the bar. 1 minute later in similar position Livi was foiled by a good save from the keeper. Hibs third goal came in 45 minutes. A Ria corner was partially cleared only to Megan R on the edge of the box. Megan’s attempt rebounded off the cross bar where a brave Megan K headed home in while suffering a kick to the face. It takes more than a kick in the head to knock Megan off her stride though. 3-0 45 minutes.
Wind assisted Hibs created a number of further chances and in 52 minutes went further ahead. Mhari created some space on the edge of the box and hit a powerful shot that was well saved by the keeper but fell kindly for Kirsty to hammer home. 4-0 52 minutes.
The wind continued to howl and the tricky conditions lead to few further clear cut opportunities. Hibs had to wait until the 80th minutes for their 5th goal a good shot from Kirsty’s was not held by the keeper, showing great anticipation Livi pounced on the loose ball to knocked the ball in before the keeper recovered. 5-0 80 minutes.
Not Hibs finest performance hindered by difficult conditions but well done girls for your perseverance.
