Forfar force Hib’s to grind out a result in a frustrating but ultimately successful cup final
A combination of a determined and well set up Forfar side and an over eager Hibs side made for a frustrating afternoon with only brief spells of the quality football we have come to expect for the Hibs girls.
The two sides met only two weeks ago in the league, with Forfar videoing the match. From the evidence of this match they took a lot of lessons from that game.
From the start Hibs looked bright and pressed forward almost scoring in the first minute with a shot from Shannon M spinning up on the line into the hand of the keeper. Hibs had a high proportion of possession in the first period of the game, their anxiety to take the lead, however saw them rushing, an unusual lack of patience creeping through the team. As a result very few clear opportunities were created. The best opportunity fell to Morgan in 7 minutes, an excellent 20 yard lob being well taken by the keeper.
Worse was to come In 9 minutes Forfar taking the lead. In their first real attack Forfar won a corner. The well taken corner lead to a goalmouth scramble, the ball broke to Forfar and was smashed firmly past Whitney.
The very large and vocal Forfar support created some serious noise.
Hibs responded well quickly winning a series of corners, as ever well executed by Ria. On 11 minutes frustrated by the lack of success from the corners Ria decided to go it alone. 1-1 straight from the corner. Great corner Ria.
Unfortunately this did not settle Hibs. Forfar continued to defend deep and Hibs continued to hit the ball forward too quickly. Hibs pressure, however, lead to a further series of corners. On 18 minutes a partially cleared corner fell to Chloe on the edge of the box and a well executed chip was met by a fine save from the keeper. Two minutes later Hibs finally took the lead another corner was met by Mhari who found some space and passed to Kirsty to drive the ball home. 20 minutes 2-1.
The Hibs crowd tension relieved partially.
Briefly Hibs found their passing football with good one two play up the left feeding the ball into Mhari who’s turn and shot was well saved. This was quickly repeated through the middle of the park with Mhari and Shannon M resulting in a great drive from Shannon from 30 yards, two minutes later further good work saw a great strike from Shannon flying narrowly over the bar.
In 34 minutes in one of their few opportunities Forfar came close to equalising. A break away on the right was not closed down quickly enough by Hibs. Forfar pushed forward to the edge of the box hitting a fierce drive bound for the bottom right hand corner. The strike equalled only by an excellent diving save from Whitney getting down quickly to turn the ball past for a corner.
Hibs success continued to be restricted to corners and on 37 minutes a Ria corner was met by Kirsty who spun and shot low and hard for goal number 3. 37 minutes 3-1 Hibs.
Half Time 3-1 Hibs
Forfar were well fired up for the second half and straight form the start created an excellent chance which was struck high and wide from the edge of the box.
The tense first half pattern however continued into the second half. Hibs’ half time oranges not having the desired calming medicinal effect.
Chances were again fairly limited in the second half. 43 minutes in Morgan broke well from just inside her own half driving forward before releasing the ball to Kirsty. Kirsty’s powerful shot was however just too close to the keeper. Further good individual play saw Ria creating an opening the resulting shot wide of the right hand post.
A few minutes later Hibs were more like their best with a series of one two from mid way inside their own half driving them forward to the bye line yielding yet another corner.
This seemed to spark a period of better play and slightly more composure from Hibs. Shannon M working the ball skilful right to find Megan R who hit an excellent drive from the corner of the box narrowly wide. Two minutes later Megan R had a further opportunity heading a well float freekick form Shannon M narrowly wide and in 56 minutes Ria created some space for Kirsty on the edge of the box the resulting drive climbing over the bar.
Hibs continued to dominate possession and individually displayed some great skill the usual fluid passing however remained illusive.
In sixty minutes Livi hit a good drive from the edge of the box well collected by the imprssive Forfar keeper. Kirsty had another opportunity in 61 minutes she was however not able to dig the ball out from her feet to get enough pace on the ball.
The final goal of the game came in 68 minutes, and not unexpectedly, came form a further corner. The one form Chloe met by Kirsty’s head at the near post.
At last the nervous Hibs support could breath a sigh of relief.
Chloessi provided some late entertainment with a thunderbolt freekick taking out the defensive wall. Otherwise the last 10 minutes played out fairly uneventfully.
A long way form Hibs finest performance but the single most important objective in a cup final is to take the cup home. Mission accomplished.
Fantastic result girls well done for sticking to the task. I hope the fizz tasted good!
