Ellon 12 v Highland 27
The U18’s went a long way to retaining their North & North East title with a solid 27-12 win over Ellon at the Meadows yesterday.
A dominant first-half display were we scored all our points was enough to see off a good hardworking Ellon side.
Early dominance was rewarded with 2 penalties from the boot of Rory Carson. 0-6.
After seeing off a period of Ellon pressure, we hit a purple patch.
From a series of rucks Stuart Watson was fed the ball 5m out from where no one was going to stop him. The referee spotted some unsporting behaviour during Rory’s conversion attempt. Allowed to retake it he slotted well from the 15m line. 0-13.
The penalty awarded at KO was kicked right into Ellon’s corner from where a lineout catch from Ben Gordon was driven forward for Rory Grant to complete a well worked score. Rory converting from the touchline 0-20.
Our next possession saw the Ellon backs blitz which we counteracted with a lovely kick in behind their left winger. A fortuitous bounce into the hands of John Clark saw him power under the posts. Rory converted to complete our first half scoring 0-27.
The second half was a bit of a stop start affair with Ellon rewarded for all their effort with 2 late tries. On this evidence Ellon should comfortably make the “champions league” in the 2nd half of the season, where we are now almost guaranteed a place.
Stuart Watson had his most effective game for us yet, ball carrying and tackling to the fore. Scrum half Tom Brogan had a strong running game allied to some clever box kicks to relieve pressure.
Overall though it is the “team” ethic that has got us to 10 out of 10 this season, with everyone pulling in the same direction. We are now down to our last 4 league games which starts with Mackie at home this weekend. Another strong performance will be required to keep the run going.
