Deeside 0 v Highland 32
The U18’s took a massive step towards retaining their league title with a professional performance against Deeside in a chilly Banchory yesterday.
Blue sky and a frosty pitch greeted us as we took on Deeside in an early KO ahead of Scotland’s match v Tonga. The sun though did its work and by KO time the conditions were perfect for a running game of rugby.
Another strong first half performance in which we dominated scrum and lineout saw us into a 20-0 lead courtesy of tries from John Clark(2), Callum Carson and Rory Grant. Rory Carson had left his kicking boots at home missing all conversions, although his kicking from hand put us in strong positions on the field.
The 2nd half saw us continue to dominate up front and allied to strong and determined running from our backs we were always in control. Deeside made it harder for us in the 2nd half without ever looking likely to score, but certainly stiffened their resistance at the breakdown and in the tackle.
John Clark completed his hatrick of tries and James Murray completed the scoring to wrap up a 32-0 win.
This was a real team performance from 1-22, the challenge now is to maintain this level in the remaining 3 league games.
John Clark caused problems whenever he had ball in hand and was deserving of his 3 tries. Captain Ben Gordon kept his cool throughout and dominated lineout possession for us. He was ably supported in the pack by Lyall Archer who is hitting top form at just the right time.
So it is now 11 from 11 this season, but a huge test awaits the boys in Orkney this weekend to keep that record intact.
