By beating Orkney by 18-0 in a cold and wet Kirkwall they made it 12 from 12 and with only 2 games left an unbeatable 6 points clear.

Despite missing inspirational captain Ben Gordon due to a bad hand injury that will keep him out for a few weeks, and district winger John Clark due to illness, there was enough depth in the squad to overcome a competitive Orkney team.

We controlled territory throughout the game, mainly through the boot of Rory Carson and great kick chases from wingers Blair Lockwood and Ross Martin. This allowed us to pressurise the Orkney rearguard in their 22 for long periods which resulted in 2 first half tries for first Lyall Archer and then James Murray, the 2nd being converted by Rory 0-12. Some big hits from Charlie Macdonald on Orkneys hard running centre stalled any Orkney attacks.
Further presure saw Orkney offside in defence, Rory taking the 3 points to see us 0-15 at half-time.

The 2nd half continued in a similar pattern a penalty from Rory putting us 0-18 ahead with 20 mins left on clock.

The heavy pitch and cold were taking their toll on all players making handling difficult, mistakes creeping in to both teams play. We saw out the game to record an excellent win.

Celebrations then ensued, much deserved for this team, and more importantly the whole squad, as it has taken all 28 players in it to get this far.

The players did single out Oscar Baird from this match, his tackle count must have been in the 20’s, and he also carried ball time and time again into the heavy Orkney pack.

It will be interesting to see how far this group of players can go, with Champions league and Scottish cup to look forward to in the New Year.

Many thanks to Orkney for their hospitality, enjoyed by all!
