Gordonstoun 22 v Highland 13
The U18’s unbeaten start to the season was ended by an excellent Gordonstoun side, in a high quality game, that was a great advert for North rugby.
Despite being in front by 13-12 going into the last 10 mins, 2 late Gordonstoun scores a penalty and a fantastic length of the field try gave them victory gave them a deserved victory.
We struggled early on with the physicality of the Gordonstoun pack at both scrum time and at the breakdown, but as the game wore on we came to terms with both even managing a couple of strikes against the head.
We managed the Gordonstoun backs well but they always looked like they had the potential to go the length of the field given a little space.
A breakaway from their pacy 2nd row saw the first try for Gordonstoun 5-0.
A training ground lineout move set Rory Grant away up the 5m chanell to just short of the line, a pop to Charlie Macdonald saw him over in the corner. Rory Carson converting from the touchline 5-7.
Gordonstoun regained the lead just before half-time as after moving the ball left, right, left they eventually found a hole in our defence 12-7 HT.
In a tight 2nd half we slotted a couple of penalties from the boot of Rory and looked like we might hang on for a win 12-13.
We gave away a soft penalty at a ruck to go behind 15-13 before that length of the field try involving both backs and forwards sealed the Gordonstoun win 22-13.
A great advert for North Youth rugby, enjoyed by players and spectators alike. It is disappointing to have our unbeaten run ended, but great credit goes to the team for what they have achived to this point. It wasn’t that we played badly just beaten by a better side on the day.
We know we have areas to work on in terms of discipline, penetration through the middle and continuity, a challenge the players are up for.
An “intelligent” 2nd row player made the comment “maybe in the long run this defeat will do us good, it has given us a good reality check” – wise words.
