U18's - Report
Date: Saturday 2nd February 2013 - Kick Off: 11:30
Moray U18 24 v Highland U18 29
What an exciting game the U18's participated in on Saturday v a very competitive Moray side.
We started brightly and despite spurning a couple of overlaps Blair Lockwood picked up a Rory Carson cross kick to open the scoring, he also converted 0-7. From two separate speculative Moray kicks our defence was found wanting as Moray hit back with 2 quick tries 10-7. Moray were next to score a well worked try to leave us trailing 17-7. We looked to be getting back in the game as Blair went over for his 2nd try to reduce the deficit to 17-12 but with barely 10 mins remaining Moray scored a lovely try out wide, well converted to take what looked like a winning 24-10 lead.
Lyall Archer got what was looking like a consolation try 24-17, when with a minute left on the clock Tom Brogan intercepted a Moray pass on his own 10m line and had the legs to go in under the posts where Rory converted to tie things up at 24-24. There was barely time to kick-off, but in trying to force a win we infringed and the Moray kicker had a shot to win the match with time up. He unluckily hit the post, rebounding into the grateful arms of a Highland back. We could have kicked it dead and accepted the draw but captain Rory Grant had other ideas and went on a lung bursting run into the Moray half. He was hauled down by the Moray cover just outside the 22 but managed to get a pass away to Hooker Callum Carson who just did enough to squeeze in at the corner 24-29.
This was harsh on Moray who had put up such a good fight, but credit to the Highland players who never gave up. We know we will have to cut out the schoolboy errors this week as we host Stirling County in the National Cup quarter -final, a challenge the boys are relishing.
