Highland U 16 squad continued their unbeaten home record with a convincing victory over Orkney. The Islanders were unbeaten so far this season and sitting on top of the League along with Mackie Academy.
Highland got off to the best possible start with quick ball to the backs allowing Ruari Casey to touch down in the corner within the first minute. This was quickly followed by scores for Fionnlagh Call and Harrison Wright and Highland were 17-0 up within the first 10 minutes.
Orkney started to get the long trip out of their legs and for the next period competed well spending more time in the highland half and almost 20 minutes passed with some good rugby from both sides but no addition to the score. Highland however started to get the upper hand and Johnny Grant crashed over on the half hour mark, quickly followed by a second from Ruari which was well converted from out wide by Iain Crush. Fionnlagh added his second under the post on the stroke of half time again converted by Iain.
Half Time 36-0
The second half saw more of the same from Highland, some good hands in the backs saw the ball out wide and hooker Ryan Gallagher joined the line at the right time to touch down out wide. The try was excellently converted by Hamish Hepburn.
As you would expect from any Orkney side the lads never gave up and the impressive outside centre broke a couple of poor attempts at tackles to get the Islanders on the score sheet. The loss of a soft try always focuses the mind and Highland stepped things up for the remainder of the game. Harrison quickly responded with his second, Stephen Grant making the conversion.
Highland dominated the final period, Johnny Grant picking up his second and Bruce Flockhart also getting on the score sheet. The final play saw Ruari go over for his hat trick try with Hamish again adding the extra points.
Full time 69-5
A massive thanks to Orkney for making the long trip and playing the game in a positive manner despite the score.
