Worthians aiming to cap 'great' year

By Michael Reeves, Deputy sports editor

JOHN Fisher has called on his Highworth Town players to turn a good season into a great one tonight.

The Worthians head to Hardenhuish Park this evening to do battle with Western League Premier Division outfit Bradford Town in the final of the Wiltshire Senior Cup.

The Elms outfit will be keen to add some silverware to a campaign of near misses after reaching the semi-final of the FA Vase - beating Bradford en route.

“The aim is to win it, you are only judged by what you win,” Fisher said. “Being runners-up means nothing - no-one remembers them.

“Also it would be nice for the lads to win it, they have had a good season, so to win it would make it a great one.

While wanting the final to be played on a Saturday afternoon, Fisher is hoping that they can celebrate a cup success at their annual presentation evening at the weekend.

“I don’t see why we have to play it on a Wednesday night, you can’t celebrate if you have won as you’ve got to go to work the next day,” the Worthians chief said.

“But we have got our presentation night on Saturday so if we win, we can celebrate then.

“It is going to be tough though. We beat Bradford in the Vase and they will be looking for revenge.”

Highworth head to Chippenham with a full strength squad after completing their Hellenic League campaign eight days ago, finishing seventh in the Premier Division.

Bradford boss Paul Shanley, who will be looking to go one better this term after losing to Melksham Town in the final last term, said, “We didn’t turn up when we played Highworth in the FA Vase earlier on and that was disappointing, so hopefully we can be better.

“Highworth haven’t seen the best of Bradford Town but hopefully they will do on Wednesday.”

Meanwhile, Purton have announced that they will be running a reserve team in the Hellenic League next term. The Redhouse outfit will field their second string side in Division Two West, with Lee Ashby, who is also replacing long-serving Alan Eastwood as club secretary, taking charge of the team.
