The weather was perfect for a good game of football and as it turned out the Highworth boys put on a great display to score five past a hard-working Cheltenham Saracens outfit.

The opening twenty minutes saw a tentative display from both sides. Build-ups were slow and the best chances for each side saw Elliot Kennedy scuffing his shot for the Saras when in a good position to score and Dan Hilder creating an opening for himself only to see his shot easily saved by Tim Griffiths.

Tony Joyce had a chance to put his name on the scoresheet but shot tamely at the keeper and then after half an hour, Highworth pressure resulted in a corner and Hilds knocked in a great ball for Ritchie Saunders to head home at the back post to give Highworth the lead.

Two minutes later, a great piece of skill from Sean McKeon saw him round a player and hit a post all in one movement and Rory Sproule was on hand to guide the rebound back into the net for the Worthians’ second.

The Saras nearly pulled one back when some good work saw Dan Wallington heading off the line with Kurtis Sharkey well beaten. Just before the end of the half, Rory Sproule nutmeged a Saras defender and struck a venomous shot which hit the crossbar.

The Saras came out in the second half, determined to get back into the game and they put the Worthians’ defence under some pressure, but as the half progressed, the quality in the Highworth side began to show and gradually they began to dominate across the park. Sean McKeon might have scored the third of the afternoon but his excellent shot was well saved by Tim Griffiths.

The introduction of Matty Bennett was to have a significant effect on the scoreline and shortly after coming on, he rounded a defender in the penalty box and deftly chipped to the far post where Ritchie Saunders was waiting to head home his second of the afternoon.

Matty Horsell managed a number of his trade mark runs down the left wing and after one such run, he knocked in a glorious ball for Matty Bennett to rifle home on the volley for Highworth’s fourth.

With ten minutes left on the clock, Dan Hilder collected the ball just over the half-way line and knocked a lovely ball over the Cheltenham defence into the path of Matty Bennett who finished clinically to make it five for the Worthians.

The Saras might have had a consolation goal when Steve Yeardley handled in the area, but Lorcan Sheehan hit the crossbar with his spot kick.

This was a great team performance by a rampant Highworth side who showed both attacking flair and solid defending. The Saras worked hard to get into the game all afternoon but they could not match the quality on show from the Worthians.
