On a windy afternoon Hinckley faced Oadby Wygs at Oval Park. There were lots of Halloween parties planned for the evening. I’m not the sort of person that regularly calls referees because without them we would not be able to play, however this referees performance was a horror show and that is being polite.
Any way enough of that on with the rugby. Most of the Hinckley players arrived in good time but some were late. This resulted in a disjointed warm up.
The game started and it was pretty even in the early exchanges one phase penalty one phase penalty and that was the pattern for the majority of the game. Wygs kicked two penalties in the 1st half and Hinckley managed to score a try through Kit Horwood
. Half time and Wygs were 6-5 up.
The 2nd half started and the horror show continued Wygs kicked over, and the ball rolled into the Hinckley in goal area. Hinckley’s full back touched the ball down and began to make his way to the 22 as he was about to cross his own try line he was tackled play on says the ref and Wygs scored and converted 13-5. Not long after Wygs kicked another penalty to take them to 16-5. Hinckley tried to build some pressure but struggled badly with continuous head scratching decisions from the man in the middle. They did eventually score a try through Joe James
which was converted by Loveday. Hinckley tried for all they were worth to score again but ultimately came up short this time.
I don’t want to take anything away from Wygs but I can honestly say I have never seen a performance from an official as bad as that in all of my time in the game, and I left Oval Park genuinely feeling sorry for the players and parents.
Note to players: If you keep playing your get out of jail free card to win games at the death at some point your luck will run out. It did today.
