DESERVED 2nd PLACE SHIELD TROPHY AT SYSTON MINI FESTIVAL
Hinckley U8s travelled to annual Syston mini festival to play Leicester Forest East, Vipers, Market Bosworth and hosts Syston, expecting to be all tough fixtures and we were not disappointed. After two wins and a draw, Hinckley had to beat hosts Syston in the last of the four matches to win outright as Syston had won all 3 of their earlier games but unfortunately salvaged a deserved draw with equalizing last play of match.
Travelling with a squad of 14 players, resulting in all players getting valuable match practice, our first opponents were Leicester Forest East. Starting confidently and playing our usual free flowing attacking rugby, HRFC U8s probably played their brightest rugby of the day. 2-0 up at half time, tries by Burton and Collerson was followed by an equally pleasing second half with another try by Burton and one for Moore. The gingers of Burton & Barnes were very impressive with their non-stop tagging, bagging 22 tags between them resulting in an opening win of 4-1 against a good Leicester Forest East side.
A vastly different Hinckley side took the field for the second game against Vipers which proved to be a tough encounter resulting in a 3-3 draw, thanks largely to good all-round team tagging performance keeping quick and elusive runners at bay. Particularly notable displays by Goodwin, Burton, Guest and Moore were well backed up by less experienced players of Buckler and Greener. Morrissey bagged herself a deserved brace, one each half with Smith scoring Hinckley’s other try.
Hinckley’s third encounter of morning against old foes Market Bosworth was probably the most tense of the day. An indifferent performance left things all square 2 a-piece at half time, another try for Burton and one for Carvell. In the second half a come-back was required, trailing 2-3, a win was clutched out of jaws of defeat thanks largely to much better tagging performance closing Bozzie runners down quicker, Barnes, Burton and Goodwin again to the fore. Second half tries by Barnes and another for ever present Burton secured this second win of the morning 4-3.
This set up the final match showdown against hosts Syston. Despite having a couple of tries disallowed early on, half time was reached all square at 2-2. Again all-round solid tagging kept Syston out for the majority of attacks, special notes for persistent good efforts by Barnes, Buckler, Greener, Guest and reliable Moore. The latter definitely having his best game of the morning scoring both first half tries and decisive last move equaliser, touching down in the corner after typical long range effort, the other second half try scored by Morrissey.
With 3 wins out of 4, Syston ran out overall victors, our 2 wins and 2 draws secured the shield trophy with Leicester Forest East finishing third, overall a solid day at the office, lads and lass doing very well although by common consensus not at their best, scoring 15 tries, conceding 11. Morning try scores Burton (4) Moore (4) Morrissey (3) and one-apiece for Barnes, Carvell, Collerson and Smith.
Special coaches praise for most improved player of the day Guest and another good tagging effort from newcomer Buckler and particularly pleasing to see less experienced players of Bradshaw and Greener getting both more valuable match practice and bagging tags in the process. Well done all, another shield for behind the bar, looking forward to Nuneaton at home next Sunday!!!
