Propels Brookies to top of the EMCL

Match Report - Holbrook Sports 3-1 Blaby & Whetstone - EMCL 28/10/17

Brookies welcomed back central defender Jack Coulson to the starting line-up after re-signing from Stapenhill allowing Kyle Wadsworth to return into midfield.

Both sides started well and after 7 minutes Blaby missed a chance to take the lead after a great cross into the box was headed wide.

Shortly after a great turn by Scott Staniland earned Holbrook a freekick which was well defended by the Blaby defence.

Brookies took the lead after 19 minutes when Josh Williams was brought down in the box. Scott Staniland stroked home the penalty to give Brookies the lead 1-0.

After 22 minutes a chance for Ryan Baker went just over the bar.

35 minutes Blaby were starting to apply the pressure and a 38th minute Blaby shot flashes wide.

After 46 minutes Brookies were unlucky not to double their lead. On the break, Josh Williams went one on one with the Blaby keeper but his shot went narrowly wide.

After 52 minutes Holbrook got the second goal. A defensive mix-up allowed Scott Staniland to go free on goal and he calmly beat the goalkeeper for his brace 2-0.

Blaby quickly reacted and pulled a goal back 3 minutes later. Ross Lavin with a calm finish following up after a Steve Smith save 2-1.

Blaby immediately went looking for a second and were unlucky not to equalise but it was Holbrook who scored next.

Great play on the right by Aaron Kendrick and Ryan Baker found Scott Staniland in the area and his volley gave the keeper no chance, Hat-trick 3-1.

A 72nd minute great one-handed save by Steve Smith kept the two lead intact and Holbrook comfortably saw out the game and could have added to the scoreline.

The victory has propelled the Brookies to the top of the table after a third of the season. Only 7 points separate the top half of the league with all teams capable of beating each other. This could be the most exciting and unpredictable title challenge in the East Midlands Counties League yet.
