Wrenthorpe too strong for the B team

by Simon Walker

B team well beaten but encoraging signs

Again we managed to deploy our team long before there’s. So far, so good. And we won the toss. From there it became rather hard work.

Wrenthorpe have watered down their A team somewhat, but the Legend That Is Maisie Thornton is still playing, along with several of their first choice players, and a new rather tall, rather intimidating fast bowler. (Where do they get them from?)

Good fielding follows throughout the Wrenthorpe innings. Tamsin slid to good effect, Lauren took a brave blow to the shoulder, Anna, Mya and Lucy all got in the way of full-blooded shots, and the general performance was very good. The bowlers – apart from rather a varied assortment of wides and no balls (one of which The Maisie Thornton smashed almost out of the ground) stuck well to their task. Lucy opened the bowling really well, Charlotte kept things very tight as well as taking a wicket in each of her overs, Emma continues to improve, Mya bowled beautifully whilst Tamsin seemed determined to take over Maisie’s mantle of fiercely aggressive if slightly erratic. Five of the Wrenthorpe team managed to get bowled, many of them to very good deliveries. A net score of 276 seemed a lot, though, and so it was to prove.

The girls managed to get off to a good start, Mya clattering two excellent fours off the first over, and things looked promising. Unfortunately, after that, a steady loss of wickets began to take its toll. Verity came in and played a gorgeous on-drive, then announced: “I never look at the ball; I just close my eyes when I hit it”. So much for all our coaching! Batting became progressively more difficult the longer it went on – and the more the Wrenthorpe pace bowlers began to tear in. The ‘new’ Holly was a case in point. At one point Andrew H (the mastermind behind Wrenthorpe) memorably gave her her instructions: “Ease up against the younger one (Lucy), but you can bowl as fast as you like at Tamsin”. To be honest, there didn’t seem much to choose between the two paces! Well done Lucy for standing up to it so well.

Final score was a gallant 262, unfortunately for the loss of 11 wickets. But another VERY encouraging performance – it’s good to see so many players making such fantastic progress.
