AFC Hayes v Horley Town
Could do better
The feelgood factor based on an unbeaten pre season and a comfortable FA Cup win , was undone with a totally inept performance on Saturday at AFC Hayes.
There were a few key players missing , but that will happen to all clubs through the season , and those that will be challenging at the end are those that can deal with that the best.
To be fair a draw may have been the fair result , as the game overall was a non event and uninspiring for both sides , but credit to the hosts who possibly wanted the win a little more than we did.
The game itself was scrappy and certainly in the first half virtually chanceless . A further blow coming right on half time when we were forced into a reshuffle following an injury to Ryan Brackpool
It was quite simply a game where the quality wouldnt have improved if we had played all night , and it was a roll your sleeves up performance that was needed to take the three points. We did huff and puff and match our opponents until they took the lead via the penalty spot with twenty to go , but such was the lack of invention in the team , that 1 goal always had the feel of a winner . When AFC Hayes doubled their lead just five minutes after , the outcome was no longer in doubt . At the very point where it would have been nice to see some character the team appeared to throw the towel in , almost resigned to their fate.
Its on to Westfield at home on Tuesday where a much improved performance will be needed if we are to take something from the game.
