Horsham swerve the Tulse Hill banana skin
Good day at the office topped-off with Joe Humphreys' super-goal.
In the pre-match talk Spunky Howarth reminded his squad that Tulse Hill & Dulwich were one of only two clubs to take six points from Horsham last season. This game was going to be an important marker in showing if the team had improved and how far it might go.
Fielding an unchanged team Horsham dominated the first 15 minutes playing joined-up, grown up, pressure hockey that was a pleasure to watch. Horsham came close on several occasions and it was with a sense of disbelief that TH & D scored first against the run of play, a soft goal resulting from an error of judgement and a poor pass in the backfield.
However Horsham continued to look the class act and a great team passing move saw Burroughs find Dean free in the D to convert a strong shot. The teams turned round at 1-1 but 10 minutes into the second half Burroughs, who had been a thorn in the side of the home team throughout the match was fouled in the D and Hough maintained his goal average by converted the short corner after.
Horsham looked to be in cruise control, but more defensive confusion let TH & D in to equalise. A slightly scrappy phase ensued by the defence stood firm - in particular they prevented TH&D from winning a single short corner. The final 10 minutes was all Horsham. Showing excellent close control iand poise in the D Pete Neave drew a defender and with a perfect pass made space for Dean to score his second. With two minutes to go it was Dean’s turn to make the play and find Joe Humphreys free at the top right edge of the D. Seemingly with all the time in the world Humphreys drilled the ball past the keeper’s head into the top left corner - it was a stunning unstoppable strike
After the game the TH&D player-coach commented that Horsham were the best side they had faced so far this season in terms of being organised and effective. Certainly there are areas to work on and Coach Dom Male has set the defence a target of 1.5 goals per game against. However when the team is on song things look very positive. It was a good day at the office.
