2018 -19 Season opens on a high

Returning Atkinson steals the show

Houghton started Durham and Northumberland division two campaign with a good win away to Winlaton. A good warm up seen Houghton enter the game in high spirits. Houghton won the flick of the coin and opted to play up hill first half. David Bains kicked the game off and with good pressure from the Houghton forwards. Glen Atkinson managed to wrestle the ball from the hands of Winlatons big number eight. Houghton launched their first attack from this, however the loss of possession seemed to spur Winlaton on. As the ball was passed to Bains, he took a big hit from two defenders and was driven back. Luckily enough Bains maintained composure and set up the ruck, which allowed Daz Witte to come in and deliver a clever chip over the backline to relieve pressure. The game went a little stagnant after this play for five minutes or so, with both teams defence cancelling each other out and a series of scrums slowing things down. Around the ten minute mark the first score came against the run of play. Houghton leading the attack tried a back move which didn't go to hand, Winlaton pounced on the loose ball before showing good composure in drawing the man and offloading to score a converted try. In the aftermath of the confusion, powerful centre James Ross took a hit to the head and needed attention. This allowed room one of last seasons Colts, Andrew Crossley make he's first team league debut as a blood replacement. Winlaton now with a little wind in their sail started to press Houghton's half. A lineout just outside the 22m line, looked to be building momentum before Lithuanian Prop Eddie Petraitis powered through the centre of the maul to make the turnover. Houghton cleared the trouble and this allowed the blood replacement allowed James Ross back into action. Houghton began to pick up the pace and with Ross getting across the gain line at every opportunity. This allowed the Houghton backrow to get on top of the breakdown. Houghton eventually got on the score sheet around the twentieth minute mark, returning flanker Glen Atkinson drove forward before offloading to Ross who was stopped just short. Number eight Craig Hicks was in support to pick up the ball and drive over, Bains converting. From the restart miscommunication allowed the ball to bounce and a Winlaton player was quicker to react. Richy Walsh attempted to make a tackle however he's arm was always rising and the referee had little option but to award the penalty which was converted. Houghton seemed to find another gear after the penalty and with Bains, Ross and Witte combining well, Houghton pressed hard. Houghton looked to have scored in the far left corner after Witte combined with Ryan Graham and the young winger danced around the defenders. The winger then linked with powerhouse second rower Walsh who made twenty metres before offloading to Graeme bennet. Unfortunately the away linesman adjudged a foot be in touch and awarded Winlaton the lineout. Winlaton cleared the danger only for young Graham to make good yards yet again. A series of forward drives from Dan Jones, Ryan Main and matt marchant set up the platform. James Ross hit a beautiful running line from David Bains to be halted just short again. Supporting fullback Tom Birtley was on hand this time to pick and go over from close range, Bains converting. H/T 8-14
The second half with Houghton having the hill and what appeared to be the fitter side, was expected to be an easy run. However a series of mistakes and poor decisions let Winlaton get on top. A penalty for a high tackle seen Winlaton press Houghton's twenty two metre line. Another turnover by Atkinson seen Bains launch an attack and with Ross carrying forward Houghton looked good. Unfortunately there was no communication between the forwards and backs and Ross was turned over. Again Winalton looked for the lineout option and this time a peel from the flanker seen him burst through the middle of the line. He was met with a hefty Craig Hicks tackle and they lost possession as prop allan scott turned the ball over. Houghton again ran from their own twenty two with Bains and Witte combing. Witte dummied the defender before making decent yards and offloading to Bennet. The winger rounded he's man and with the pitch ahead of him, he decided to cut back inside when the pass looked the easier option and the move ended with a knock on. The game slowed to a snail's pace for the next ten minutes as both sides hands let them down and scrum after scrum occurred. Houghton rotated the Bench which allowed Walsh, Eddie and young Crossley back onto the park. The substitutions made a instant impact with Eddie and Walsh playing direct rugby, it set the platform for Bains now playing at nine to deliver clean ball. Witte took a flat pass and again drew the whole defensive line before passing to Crossley who made good yards, unfortunately the ball went forward from the next pass. Houghton now looked like scoring and the next score did come their way. A Winlaton lineout was passed out before Adam Reay turned over the ball. The quick phase seen the Houghton pack work well together, with Atkinson, Hick and Jones are driving forwards. The next wave of attack seen prop Eddie Petraitis crash over three defender to score, Crossley converting. With a minute left on the clock Houghton ran the ball back. Witte again drew in the defence and offloaded to Jones who came at a perfect angle. The ball was recycled and a chip chase never quite came off and the ball ran into touch, allowing the referee o blow for full time.
