The decision to take on the Chairman’s role until the end of the season was not an easy one, the fact that Liz Morley had a full grasp of the financial position helped and her confidence in the future was a key issue in my decision. Yes very disappointed with recent events, the club has had time to reflect on the problems that developed, a small local football club is more difficult than any Conservative/ Liberal pact... I know that Steve is a real football man but politics is a different matter…
My first task was to speak to Des and advise him of the situation and then speak to the players, I thanked Des and let him know that I would be taking an interest in the football again after a period of three seasons absence and that I would help in any way possible, the target being to get into the play offs which is of course still a possibility, if anyone can do it perhaps Des can. I then spoke with Kevin Wilson at Ilkeston who remains a close friend, and wound him up by saying that I wished to put a bid in for Gary Ricketts and we discussed the current league position and football club finances, Ilkeston’s gate is a help and winning games even more important. Things are now on the move at the club and it is the intention to issue the shares to all who have contributed, Mark Burnell is instructed to proceed and the new company will first takeover the Talk of the Town operations, the actual transfer of the football activities will then take place in the summer.
Let us hope that we can resume our football with a win away on Saturday at Market Drayton, the fixtures will come on quickly with some interesting battles ahead in a league that is very competitive and the top teams could hold their own in the Premier Division.
The club is holding a get together with a number of supporters on Thursday evening in an attempt to debate some of the issues that have caused concern I hope they attend as they may find some of the answers very interesting, as a club policy it has now been agreed not to enter any comment on the fans forum and we will develop our club site, if anyone wishes to help we would be pleased to hear from you…
