History
It is thought that the YMCA football section was formed in the 1920’s but there does not appear to be any records of successes until the season of 1940/1 when the senior team won the prestigious Huddersfield FA Invitation Cup. This was repeated in 1943/4 and again in 1947/8.
The first victorious season winning the first division
championship was in the 1952/3 season but they then went on to a hat trick of victories in 1955/6/7/8. The
double of league and Barlow cup was in 1955/6.
In 1948/9 season a team was formed at the Milnsbridge branch of the YMCA with successes coming with promotion from the 5th division to the 2nd in consecutive seasons. When finally achieving 1st division status they won the
Barlow cup in 1958/9.
In 1984 with the closure of the boys’ club at Milnsbridge the 2 clubs combined and have continued to the present day.
Both clubs ran junior teams in the Red Triangle League and were very successful in winning league championships and cups at all the various age groups. Boys who went on to higher things were Trevor Cherry with Huddersfield Town, Leeds United and England, and Chris Galvin with Leeds Utd.
When the Red Triangle League wound up on the advent of Sunday football the junior sections went into the Sunday leagues and have had many successes over the years.
The latest venture by the club is with what is now known as mini soccer with teams being run at all ages from under 6 to under 10 in the mini version of football and younger than this from U6 to U8 is fun soccer where the emphasis is on technique and being comfortable with a ball at their feet. Eleven a side teams run from U11 finishing with U17 teams and concentrate on technique, communication & Attitude
The future of the club is looking very good with all the
activities in hand and due to the support our guests have shown equipment and facilities will be improved for the boys.
