Local News

August is upon us and the serious stuff is now only 5 weeks away; preparations are winding up throughout the next month –

Next week-end, 9th August, there is a 10s competition when the players will get the opportunity to experience some contact and demonstrate their outstanding handling skills. Teams from the 1sts, Hawks and Buccs will be competing for the prestigious trophy. Supporters will get the opportunity to come along and cheer them on, enjoy a beer and Barbie (don’t tell Ken) and celebrate the Chairman’s’ 21st birthday.

On the 16th August I’s host Glasgow Warriors who are travelling south before the wall goes up and the borders close. England expects every man will do his duty, both on and off the pitch, so come along and let’s see the Jocks strapped.

The bank holiday week-end provides an opportunity for every able bodied player to have a run out before the start of the season with practice sessions against local sides Danum Phoenix and Hullensians at BP. Less abled bodied former players will be in Europe talking about how everything was better in the good old days.

The final Saturday of the month provides more stern opposition against newly promoted DMP, who swap places with I’s in N1. The Northern Echo stadium is the venue for what will be a very interesting and competitive match.

More teams to trek to.

Sedgley Park – Sedgley Parks first ground was a farmer’s field in Whitefield, despite the primitive conditions - cowshed for changing, farmyard pump for washing - the new club thrived. A clubhouse had already been built and three regular teams were being fielded before war broke out in 1939. In 1955 S.P. moved to their present site, with an immediate and spectacular improvement in playing standards.
When the Courage Leagues began in 1987 Sedgley Park had progressed far enough to be placed in North West 2 [level 8], from which they gained promotion at the first attempt.
Sedgley Park remained in North West 1 for seven years; meanwhile, the club was expanding in other directions with a huge increase in quantity and quality at the age-group level of the game. When the game went ‘open’ in the middle nineties, Sedgley Park was ready for the next leap forward.
Promotion was achieved three years in succession; the clubhouse was extended. Another promotion, in 2001, took them into National League Two, level 3 of the English game before attaining League One status in 2004, the 6th promotion since 1987.
They survived at level 2 for several years until a league re-organisation took S.P. down to level 3 again for the 2009-10 season.
Relegation brought the down to level 4 last season where they achieved a creditable fourth place, behind big hitters DMP, Macclesfield and Stourbridge.
Pat will sail the good ship Cantona up the Calder & Hebble Canal, down the Huddersfield Narrow, along the Ashton canal before navigating up the Manchester, Bolton & Bury canal which will get him to within a brisk walk of Sedgley Park and allow him to regain his land legs whilst rehearsing his post lunch address.

Birmingham & Solihull, known as the Bees, has a history that would make a much more interesting story even
than the classic midlands soap, Crossroads.

Fact certainly is stranger than fiction.
The most up to date news on their website informs us that they are to initiate a 2nd XV, with fixtures been organised for October 2013. Brum isn’t boring, honest.
