Hull Daily Mail story

TWO young people from Hull left paralysed following illness and a car crash are supporting each other through their nightmare ordeals.

Former Hull KR youth player Jordan Davies, 18, and Sammi Petersen, 22, who worked at a Hessle Road salon, are both receiving treatment in the same specialist spinal ward at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

Jordan, of Orchard Park, north Hull, was told in April that his unexplained back pain, which developed into paralysis, was caused by a "mass" on his spine.

Sammi, of west Hull, was a passenger in a car that crashed on the A1035, near Leven, in May, leaving her with severe spinal damage, a ruptured bowel and a broken hip and pelvis.

On August 31, about 100 family and friends of Jordan and Sammi will take part in a sponsored relay across the Humber Bridge.

Organiser Dave, 24, said: "People can run, jog or walk it, but they can also have a go at completing it in a wheelchair.

"It will show able-bodied people how difficult life can be in a wheelchair."

Dave is being loaned wheelchairs from a disabled rugby team.

Proceeds from the event will go to both families, enabling them to adapt their homes before Jordan and Sammi return home.

Dave said he intends to use the event, which will team teams of four or five set off at 11am, as a "warm-up" to a more challenging fundraiser in October.

"I'll be travelling 140km in a wheelchair from Bradford to Hull to raise funds and awareness," he said.

Sponsorship forms for the Humber Bridge event are available from both families. Alternatively, email s.a.m.m.i@hotmail.com or call Maxine on 07772 907379.
