King Looks for Fresh Blood

Brendon King, manager of Premier Division club Weymouth, has turned down the opportunity of a loan move for Dorchester Town midfielder Jamie Symes.

The ex-Bridport man was offered to Weymouth last week but the Terras’ boss is looking further afield for fresh blood after releasing Rob Wolleaston and Lewis Tasker on Sunday evening.

He said: “It is true Jamie was offered to us recently but that is not the route we are looking to go down at the moment.

“I had a couple of lads come down to training last night, who I have had a chat with.

“They are not local and although I would not brand them as experienced, they should be more than good enough for this level.

“It is just a case of taking a look at them and going from there.”

Wolleaston was the highest earner at the Terras and with the club’s board having assured King that all the freed up funds will go towards new recruits, the determined manager is spreading his net far and wide.

He added: “Matt Groves and I have been making loads of calls and speaking to players but obviously at this stage of the season it is always pretty tough to get what you want.

“But rest assured we will be doing everything we can and there are certain areas of the squad that we are looking to strengthen.

“We need another forward and another midfielder that is for sure.

“We have missed Jamie Beasley and his pace down the flanks massively but obviously trying to unearth another one like him is going to be difficult.”

Perhaps the biggest concern of all has been the Terras’ recent defensive record, which has seen them concede fifteen goals in their first seven games.

When asked for his thoughts, King said: “When we talk about defending it is not just about the back three or four.

“It’s about defending as a whole unit and that is clearly something we need to work on.

“Last Saturday against Evesham United, the first goal was unfortunate whereas the second was a well-worked set-piece where one of our markers has been deliberately blocked off.

“Sometimes the referee notices it and sometimes you get away with it, so fair play to Evesham for that, but there is no doubt we have got to learn from that and make sure we become a little more streetwise.”
