The Newbury squad for the new season in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division is taking shape.

Manager Steve Melledew was very pleased with the players who have signed forms for the current season.

He admitted that a couple of weeks ago he was getting a bit concerned but not only has he managed to retain most of last year's squad but has added to the overall strength of the team with the signings of prolific striker Ray Spence from South Reading, former Hungerford Town and Thatcham Town centre back Mark James, ex-Lambourn defender Ben McCready and goalkeeper Andy Bayliss, who played for both Newbury and Burnham last season.

These additions, plus the club's youth players are that year older and some of them will be pushing for starting places, gives Melledew a decent squad to work with.

Meanwhile, Newbury have welcomed back Craig Adey as first-team coach for the new season.

Melledew said: “We are very lucky to get Craig back at Newbury as he is a first rate coach.

“The players have a lot of respect for him and are looking forward to working with him.”
