'UHLSPORT' Hellenic League - Weekend Review

Premier Division
Abingdon Town were too strong for new boys Holyport, scoring three without reply, courtesy of Carl Bloomfield, Mark Janes and Ian Roper. Ascot United were thumped with a deluge of second half goals by Wantage Town. David Bostock gave the Alfredians an early lead, but the main onslaught came after the 60th minute with goals from Mark Threlfall, Rich Claydon and Danny Keen with a pair. Jon Bennett managed a late consolation for the Yellamen. Fairford Town recorded their first win of the season against Bracknell Town. Nathan Gambling put the hosts in front early on but Mark Hayward equalised before the break. Gambling was then on hand to hit his second of the afternoon and the winner in the last minute of the game. Henley Town conceded three without reply to Highworth Town. On target for the Worthians were Ritchie Saunders, and in the last minute of the game, Mark Barnes and Danny Hilder.
Kidlington shared the points and four goals with Shrivenham. Zack McEachran put Kiddy into an early lead but Arron Maximen soon equalised for Shrivvy. Danny Leggett gave the hosts the lead again, from the spot, but Maximen equalised late in the second period. Oxford City Nomads’ impressive start to the season came to a juddering halt at the hands of Flackwell Heath. Lee Thompson put the Heathens into an early lead but James Dobson replied from the spot soon after. However, the Heathens ran riot in the second half with goals from John Isaac, Ben Sturgess and Danny Jordan with two. Shortwood United were already two up by the break thanks to Tim Haddock and Joe Tustain before Mark Bartley was able to reply for Reading Town, however it was not enough to start a comeback. Slimbridge’s unbeaten run came to an emphatic end at the hands of visitors Binfield, losing 4-1. On target for the Moles were Ian and Carl Davies, Danny Wing and Carl Withers with Brad Martin supplying the Swans’ consolation. Dan West gave Thame United an opening lead against Cheltenham Saracens but Luke Tovey replied and with just five minutes left on the clock, Tom Russell hit the winner for the Saracen’s. Wokingham & Emmbrook shared the points and two goals with unbeaten Ardley United. Adam Garner gave the visitors an early lead but Sam Wyatt equalised just before the break.

One East Review
Abingdon United Reserves were no match for Rayners Lane, conceding half a dozen times without reply. On target for Lane were Ryan Upton with a four-timer, Andy Forbes and Lawrence Yaku.
Table toppers Chalfont Wasps maintained their position after a closely fought encounter with Lambourn Sports that saw them win by the odd goal in five. Ryan Martindale hit a hat-trick for the Wasps with Dave Stroud and Dan Langford replying for the Sports. Letcombe went into the break leading against Woodley Town thanks to Mark Brind and Lyle Gifford efforts, but eventually lost by the odd goal in five after strikes from Jamie Fairchild, Jordan Sawyer and Brett Rann for the Town. Alex Bird scored the only goal of the game in the second half for Milton United at home to Finchampstead. Newbury maintained their 100% record with a fine win over Chinnor, courtesy of Craig Hill, Kalief Madden and Jeff Craig with a hat-trick. Penn & Tylers Green thought they had done enough to win an exciting encounter with Maidenhead United after Reno Sepede opened the scoring for Penn but Sankoh Lammin replied almost immediately. Ade Adeniji then put the visitors into the lead just after the break but Luke Cohen equalised and with minutes left on the clock Sepede scored again, but that man Lammin spoilt the party with his second of the afternoon in the final moments of the game. Thatcham Town won a close encounter by the odd goal in three over Hungerford Town, in a game which saw John Mahoney give the Centurions an early lead, Russell Benham reply soon after and Shaun Thorp hit the winner with only ten minutes remaining.

Division One (West)

Brimscombe & Thrupp recorded their first win in the Hellenic League after cruising past Trowbridge Town, scoring four without reply. On target for the Lilywhites with first half efforts were Chris Underwood, Gary Probert, John Dalton and with a fine individual goal late in the game, David Woodfield. Cirencester Town 'Dev' had Connor Teague to thank for his first half strike which was enough to seal the victory over Lydney Town. Clanfield went a goal down to a Jimmy Potts effort just before the break for Winterbourne United, but with only a minute left on the clock, Lee Keyes popped up to rescue the game and a point with his equaliser.
Cricklade Town were too good for Carterton, hitting five without reply courtesy of Ben Carter and Alex Povey with two each and Tom Price with one. Easington Sports’ impressive start came to an abrupt end losing by the odd goal in five against New College Swindon. Old Woodstock Town maintained their 100% record inflicting a heavy defeat on Hook Norton who shipped five without reply. Hitting the back of the net for the Town were Liam Godden, Dan Roberts, Murray Nicholls and Dan Green with a pair.
Purton were on fire, scoring half a dozen without reply against last year’s champions, Headington Amateurs. Lining up for goal-scoring duty were Lee McMullen, Marcus Hall, Ashley Piotrowski and Darren Brown with a brace. Tytherington Rocks maintained their position as league leaders with a 6-0 thrashing of Malmesbury Victoria. Leading the turkey-shoot were Justin Bishop and Mark Hughes with two-a-piece, Jason Wood and Toby Colbourne also got on the score sheet.

Monday 29th August

Premier Division

Binfield’s local derby with Ascot United was all over after 24 minutes, thanks to a lightning fast hat-trick from Ian Davies for the Moles. Basement side Bracknell Town conceded three without reply to Wokingham & Emmbrook. On target for the Satsuma’s were Garry Sargeant, Luke Lee and Dean Thomas. New boys, Cheltenham Saracens lost by the only goal of the game from Kevin Slack in their keenly contested match with Shortwood United.
Fairford Town went down to a Graham Lewis effort for Reading Town but Jack Williams equalised to earn a valuable point. Shrivenham scored twice before the break through Josh Parsons and Dane Moulden against visitors, Abingdon Town in this season’s first leg of the ‘Teapot Challenge. Lance Williams managed to get one back from the spot late in the game but Shrivvy hung on for a welcome win.
Slimbridge were two up after 20 minutes through Lewis Wilton and Alex Higgs against Highworth Town, but despite pressure in the second half, the Worthians were only able to get one back through Tyler Sheppard. Witney Town shared four goals with Wantage Town. Rich Claydon put the Alfredian’s into an early lead but Jack Lonsdale soon replied to make it 1 -- 1 at the break. Andy Younie gave Witney the lead but this was cancelled out by Danny Keen’s spot kick. League leaders Flackwell Heath maintained their 100% record with a win against Henley Town, courtesy of a Lee Thompson pair. Holyport’s baptism of fire in the Premier continued conceding three first half goals to Ardley United from Stuart Bridges and Lewis Cordice with a brace. Jamie Handscomb managed to get one back after the break but it was not enough to affect the result.

Division One (West)

Brimscombe & Thrupp recorded their second win in a row against Cirencester Town 'Dev', despite conceding early. Chris Underwood and then John Dalton ensured the result for the Lilywhites. Carterton were sunk by a goal either side of the break from Lee Keyes for visitors, Clanfield. Lydney Town were beaten by leaders Tytherington Rocks in a closely fought game which saw four goals and a missed penalty within the last five minutes. Toby Colbourne gave the Rocks a half-time lead, that was doubled by Mark Hughes after 85 minutes, Adam Price pulled one back only to see Colbourne grab his second. However Sam Elliott’s strike set up a frantic final period which saw the Rocks hang onto the points after Town failed to capitalise from the spot. Malmesbury Victoria went into the break a goal down to New College Swindon’s George Wrona. Ed Wilkins equalised early in the 2nd period, but strikes in the last 10 minutes from Nathan Blackford and Sam Brown ensured the victory for the College. Old Woodstock took the lead late in the game through Lee Prpa against Easington Sports but Pete Moulder replied almost immediately to ensure the draw. Purton went into a very early lead through Ashley Piotrowski at home to Cricklade Town, but Alex Povey and Ben Carter replied within half an hour to give Crick the result. Winterbourne United put six past a hapless Hook Norton outfit Jimmy Potts lead the charge with a fine hat-trick, with goals from Greg Stutt, Sam Vile and Ben Dowdell. Wootton Bassett beat Trowbridge Town, scoring half a dozen times Ethan Delaney netted twice. Brad Whitham managed a consolation effort for the visitors.

Division One (East)

Didcot Town remain at the foot of the table after a drubbing conceding seven times against Abingdon United with Joe Parker leading the scorer’s with two. Hungerford Town were well beaten by Rayners Lane who maintain their 100% record, with strikes from Dene Gardner, Paul Leslie and Ryan Upton with a pair. Harry Halls and Rich Meikle managed replies for the Centurions. Maidenhead United were two-up at the break through Junior Tishauw and Ishmail Kamaria against Highmoor Ibis, but a last minute reply from Jamal Ford-Small was too little too late to start a comeback.
