Huntsville make it to the TrueSouth play-offs!
It was a beautiful day in Cedar Bluff Virginia, and after a long drive to get there, anticipation was high. The last match against Clinch River was disappointing so this was a chance to play good rugby and redeem ourselves. This match would be the decider for the TrueSouth (North) championship with the winning team taking top position and the loser taking second place, so everything to play for.
Early into the match Huntsville were awarded a penalty and elected to kick for goal and Roof, who's kicking has greatly improved handled the pressure very well, 0-3 Huntsville. Unfortunately things went downhill from there and Clinch River capitalized on some poor defending on Huntsville part and went into the half time having scored three tries, converting two, 19-3 Clinch River.
After some calm coaching points and advice from the coaching staff, Huntsville went into the second half with an uphill battle. Are they up to the challenge was the question? That looked to be answered when, after some beautiful rugby, Chaney, Huntsville hooker took the ball over the line to score a wonderful try in the corner for Huntsville. Alas, too big an ask for the boot of Roof to convert, 19-8. Huntsville at last began to settle down and started to play with confidence, putting on some fantastic shows of rugby which through no fault of their own, frustratingly didn't result in tries. Huntsville however didn't lose heart and in a demonstration of rugby that would have made any Welshman proud, took the ball from deep in their own half and played it to score a well executed try, again into the corner, this time in the capable hands of the full-back Roof, 19-13. 15 minutes to go and both teams are exhausted due to the heat and humidity, but Huntsville were within a try and a conversion of taking the match and Clinch River knew it.
But it wasn't to be! Clinch River held on and the final score was a hard fought 13-19 Clinch River, giving Huntsville second place in the TrueSouth table. Be aware Clinch River and the other play-off teams, Gadsden and Gulf Coast, Huntsville have their mojo back!
