Hyndland picked up a friendly on Saturday against Clydesdale from the division above us and managed to turn a 5-17 deficit into a 22-17 win. With it being an international weekend Hyndland were missing some regulars but started well and opened the scoring after 5 minutes when Lock Paddy O’Callaghan picked up a loose ball and made good yards before giving a well timed pass to centre paul jones who scored in the corner 5-0. Clydsdale were stung into action and used their backs to good effect to run in 3 tries, one of which they converted for a 5-17 halftime lead.
Hyndland started the second half strongly and No8 Danny Harris drove over after some good pick and goes by the forwards 10-17. At this point Hyndland winger Matt martin left the field with a cut head and was replaced by the Dubai bound Duncan Gourlay. Hyndland kept up the driving play starting with the scrums where hyndland had the upper hand, but lack of awareness at the base of the scrum was costing Hyndland so the backs took a hand, and after good quick ball was fed out centre paul jones drove over for his second try converted by Tony Smith 17-17. Hyndland then changed winger Ed Jessop with Dougie Wright coming on and Paul McGonagle at prop gave way to Stornoway RFC legend Bubbles Mackay allowing him to play alongside his son David in the Hyndland colours. Bubbles soon proved his worth after a bullocking run he was finally halted and quick ball allowed Standoff Tony Smith to dance and then force his way over in the corner for the winning score 22-17. All in all a good win for Hyndland with a makeshift team in a match that was very well controlled by Ref Douglas Gilchrist. There is no game this Saturday due to the Scottish International at Murrayfield but the following Saturday 24th we will be playing Strathclyde Police in a rearranged League Match at Scotstoun with a 1.30pm KO.
