Wakers Ton Closes Season With Win
Braishfield 203-3 H&D 205-3
Hythe & Dibden closed a memorable season for the club with a win 7 wicket win at Braishfield.
7th October but the weather was lovely as they visited the peaceful setting just outside David Gower's back garden.
Peaceful that is but for the noise of a strimmer in the background and two dozen sheep that showed up to support Dan Duell.
Hythe strengthened their side late on by including 9 year old Harry Wakely instead of Chiv. Dan Duell was looking for 49 runs to take the Batting Trophy for the season whilst Ben Holbrook & Kev Mc were head to head in the bowling stakes.
Kev tossed up and shouted across ' right men we are fielding ~ 35 over game.'
The next two hours saw Braishfield hit 203-3 thanks to 102* from Jack Corbett & 52* from James Light. Hythe entertained especially in the field where Rolly, Ojus & Dan Duell all let 4s through to the boundary via under their bodies.
Harry Wakely bowled his first ever spell in senior cricket ~ 3 overs for 16 more economical than his old man. Jonjo bowled dross and with his final ball of the afternoon Ben Holbrook claimed the wicket of Ben Brown to take the Sunday leading wicket taker award.
So the Braishfield lads were chirpy at tea after hitting over 200 and thinking the game was in the bag. But slim line Wakers (getting in shape for his SPL ventures) and Gareth Mead had other ideas. They put on 51 for the 1st wicket before Mead was caught for 17.
Wakers was in cruise control and with Dan Duell at the other end Dan was getting ever closer to that batting award. But with the score on 124 and Dan 31 he stupidly looked for a quick single which Wakers was having none of and out. 73 the partnership.
Wakers & Pete Miller then added a further unbeaten 62 before Wakers brought up a fine ton. Kev let him carry on for another over before he retired 110*. Pete & Rolly saw Hythe home with 24 balls remaining after Jonjo fell for a duck.
So a nice way to end a great season and once again thanks to the Braishfield lads ~ excellent hosts as always and the complimentary chips were nice at the Wheatsheaf.
