Cricklefield boss discusses tough challenges ahead

Ilford boss Allan Fenn added to his squad this week with the signings of two talented wide men.

George Whitelock has joined from Ryman Premier outfit Leatherhead on loan, as non-league journeyman Lee Flavin also moves to Cricklefield.

Paul Clayton has returned to Ryman North Romford, but Fenn is happy with his two new additions.

“It is a big loss losing Paul, but we have brought in Lee Flavin and George Whitelock,” he said.

“Lee has been at St Albans and Bury Town. He was up in Scotland recently.

“He is a very good player and has undoubted quality. And when a player like that becomes available you take advantage.

“If we can put an arm around him and he likes the atmosphere, hopefully we can get the best out of him.

“George has been with Thamesmead and was with Margate last season and for someone so young he is very composed.”

The duo will be available for Saturday’s match at Waltham Forest and Tuesday’s trip to Bowers & Pitsea.

Ilford’s fixture with Hullbridge was postponed last weekend, but they beat Eton Manor 2-1 last night (Wednesday) in the Essex Senior League.

Speaking before that victory, Fenn discussed some of the tough challenges ahead.

“Waltham Forest are a footballing side so they will look to get the ball down and Bowers have been smashing people for fun,” he added.

“They have got a decent budget and a good manager in Rob Small. They are definitely one of the best teams in the league.

“It is games like these against Waltham Forest, Bowers and Hullbridge that excite me and we should be excited for these games to see where we measure against teams like this.”
