Fenn: We’ve got a lot of quality

Ilford manager Allan Fenn has described his side as ‘strong and resolute’ ahead of their first home match of the season against London Bari tonight (Wednesday).

The Foxes began their Essex Senior League campaign with a 2-2 derby draw at Barking, a performance that Fenn called “poor and abject” despite Blues being touted as one of the favourites to win the title.

Ilford took a first-minute lead through Carl Mullings, but Barking responded twice before half time.

Glen Warwick equalised in the second half with a stunning strike on his debut to ensure an opening day point for both teams.

“Initially the first feeling I had was relief,” said Fenn. “I’m pleased because we managed to get a draw, but it was an undeserved draw in my opinion.

“We were fortunate with our luck, but one thing I was really happy about was the character the lads showed because we weren’t at the races at all.

“It frustrates to know that if played as well as we could then we could have won that game. But in saying that, it’s a fantastic point to win at Barking at any stage of the season.”

The match was also a sour one as first choice left-back Sam Bubb suffered ruptured ankle ligaments, meaning he will miss tonight’s game and will be out of action for four to six months.

Lithuanian striker Karolis Atutis returns from suspension tonight, meaning Fenn will have a full strength squad at his disposal, bar the injured Bubb and the suspended Chris Stevens and Ajay Ashnike.

Fenn is confident of getting a good result against Bari, but has warned about complacency.

“Have I got confidence tonight? Of course I have, we’re at home, we’re strong, we’re resolute and we’ve got a lot of quality.

“But unexpected results can happen like Basildon United showed when they lost 2-0 to Tower Hamlets.

“I believe that every game we go into that we can win. I’ve got confidence within myself and my players whenever we’re playing.”

Ilford take on London Bari tonight at Cricklefield Stadium with a 7.45pm kick-off.
