1.2 Objective
The aim of the selection policy is to provide and manage a selection process that enables the club to establish:
1.2.1 A successful 1st XV at the highest level sustainable.
1.2.2 A thriving and successful team structure that provides all players with a fair and equal opportunity to both progress and enjoy their rugby at Ilkeston to the full.
1.2.3 To fulfil all of our fixtures to the best of our ability fielding the strongest possible sides at all levels.
1.2.4 Not to knowingly play a player at a level above his ability and to monitor the exposure of young developing players.
1.3 Rules
While the club will always endeavour to manage selection to the following rules there may be times when it is not possible due to an exceptional circumstance.
1.3.1 Players will inform their respective Team Manager of their availability for the following weeks on the Saturday or at the latest by the following Monday, otherwise that player will be deemed as unavailable.
1.3.2 Players who miss a game should notify their previous Team Manager of their future availability.
1.3.3 Players who fail to play when selected without notifying a member of the selection committee will not be considered for selection until a reasonable explanation has been received.
1.3.4 Each week the merits of individual players will be considered when team selection is made.
1.3.5 Attendance of club training sessions will be a selection consideration.
1.3.6 No player will normally be dropped more than one team at a time, conversely it will not be usual to promote any player more than one team at a time. The exception to this may be a Colt...Colts will be selected for senior sides best suited to their ability.
1.3.7 The starting point for a player in selection each week is the team for which he was originally selected the previous week and not the team that he ultimately played for that week.
1.3.8 Any player who is selected for a lower side the following week will be given an explanation by a member of the coaching team or the relevant Team Manager.
1.3.9 Under normal circumstances a player will not be selected on the bench for more than one week at a time subject to best practice being observed in relation to league positional requirements or other practical selection considerations.
1.3.10 Team selection will normally be posted on the club website on a Wednesday with the relevant Team Manager making appropriate individual contact.
1.3.11 Players are expected to confirm their selection immediately upon receiving notification of selection.
1.4 Redress
Any player who believes that they have not been given either fair treatment or consideration should raise their concerns with the Director of Rugby immediately.
