Illingworth bounced back from last week’s last ball agony to get back on the winning trail with a spirited if laboured home victory over Horsforth Hall Park.
In a match delayed by the heavy overnight rain and reduced to 40 overs per side the visitors, although inserted on a damp wicket, got off to a high speed start. Jamie Moorhouse
struck early having visiting captain Peter Kempton well caught by Dorian Brooksby
with the score on 28 but the visitors overseas man Burger looked set for a big score and at 67-1 the visitors looked in control. Sean Stevenson
the Illingworth overseas player removed his counterpart with a brilliant slip catch from Luke Brooksby
’s bowling and when Stuart Thompson
removed opener Walshaw shortly after the game took on a different hue at 89-3. Worse was to follow for the visitors as home skipper Luke Brooksby
registered his first hat trick in senior cricket plunging the visitors to 89-6 with two clean bowled victims and an lbw in successive deliveries. The home attack were in no mood to let the advantage slip and Brooksby adding one more to finish with 5-39 and Moorhouse mopping up the tail with two more victims to finish with a creditable 4-34, the visitors slumped to 123 all out in only the 32nd over losing their last eight wickets for just 34 runs.
The home side didn’t have it all their own way and with overseas man Burger leading the way were soon in trouble. A steady opening partnership from Stevenson and Farrell-Smith looked to be blunting the visitors’ edge but when both fell in quick succession to be followed by three more, the alarm bells started to ring. Veryan Brooksby
took the attack to the visitors and although offering chances sped to the day’s top score of 32 off 27 balls. James Lawton
and Luke Brooksby
steadied the ship taking the score towards three figures but when both fell with victory in sight it looked as though there might be one last twist in the game. Fortunately for the home side Ledger and Moorhouse negotiated the last fifteen runs without further alarm to pick up a hard earned victory by three wickets.
