Craig secured their first win of the season with a hard fought victory at home to Ross Sutherland Wildcats. A slow start from the Craig players saw Ross score an early try and hit the front. However this set back seemed to settle the home side a little bit and they began to make progress through their superior forward pack. Philip Grant was a little unlucky to have his try adjudged as being held up.
Soon after, a good backs move was finished off in the corner by John Kelly(Not even a slight doubt about the grounding of the ball!!). Fraser Kelman reflected the superiority of Craig's forwards by going over for a try to put Craig into a 10-7 lead. Just before half time Ross struck again, pouncing on some poor tackling to leave the half time score 14-10 to the away side.
The second half however belonged to the Inverness side. Captain Nick Morgan scored a superb try within a couple of minutes of the restart. He made an 80 yard solo dash and cut straight through the Ross defence, leaving at least 6 defenders in his wake. As the half went on the front 8 really turned the screw on the Ross forwards and two further tries arrived. Barry Mckelvie bashed his way over the line and Jamie Fraser rounded off a nice move by touching down on his debut. Ross barely threatened the Craig line after the break and the final score of 27-14 reflected Craig's second half dominance.
Overall, it was a very encouraging performance for a team that still features a host of new players and should act as a motivator for the season ahead. Craig's next game is this Saturday at Canal Park versus Shetland.
