Ipplepen secured a 124-run victory against Mount Edgecumbe CC in the traditional start-of-season friendly on the edge of the River Tamar.

Having driven through torrential rain en route to the ground, it was a major surprise to arrive at Mount Edgecumbe to find clear skies and a dry wicket. Having lost the toss, Ipplepen were asked to bat first and due to some timing issues among certain drivers, 'Pens opened with a new-look partnership of Simon Tapley and Matt Quartley.

The two openers got the innings off to a steady start, but Quartley was quickly into his stride depositing the opening bowler into the next field on a couple of occassions, before losing his off-stump to an out-swinging full toss. Chris Partridge came in at number 3 and made a tidy 13 before being given out LBW.

Ipplepen then had a slight crisis as Jack Lewis and Sam De Friend came and went in short time, with Edgecumbe's change bowler Stein working up a fair pace for the first game of the season and sending the bails flying.

Tom Cooper then arrived to steady the ship, and with time begining to run out Tapley decided to try and up the scoring rate with some lusty hitting before losing his wicket. This nrought in Sam Wakeham who found the slower bowling to his liking, and he deposited the ball to all parts of the boundary in a rapid-fire 62.

Ipplepen finished on 199/6 leaving the hosts with a target of exactly 200 runs to win the game.

After an intermission that included rain, hailstones, thunder and lightning the game resumed in freezing temperatures with the wicket now very damp. Opening bowlers John Sewell and James Wotton were into the action and Wotton claimed the first 2 scalps - the first to a good slip catch by De Friend and the second clean bowled.

The Edgecumbe batting line-up struggled with the conditions and accuracy of the 'Pens bowlers, and were never able to find a partnership who could stick together for any length of time. Several bowlers were able to turn their arm over, with Graham Peach getting in on the wicket-taking action and Keith Wakeham claiming 2 wickets in 2 balls. There was even time for occassional spinners Cooper and De Friend to claim a wicket apiece at the end to secure a comfortable victory.
