Women 1's secure place in Indoor National League Div 2

Great 3rd place finish

Last weekend Ipswich headed to Whitgift School for the South Division 2 National League Indoor.

First up was Trojans. After a slow start, Ipswich were 2-0 down but began to get a rhythm and the ball fell to Lucy Dunnett who flicked it into the net. After half time, Ipswich slipped to 3-1 but player/coach Lizzy Wheelhouse scored for 3-2. Counter attacking play by Trojans, who were eventual winners, killed off the game with two goals in quick succession .

Next up West Herts. A great PC by Sophie Sexton, opened the scoring and then it was Dunnett again from another PC. West Herts did pull a goal back but some great saves by Hannah Cooper saw Ipswich take the win.

Sunday started against Cambridge City & despite going behind early Ipswich pressed well to equalise. Beth Scott we a neat finish. Ipswich then missed a Penalty Stroke and City went ahead for a second time, but Sexton converted another penalty stroke with 2 minutes to play and claim a draw.

Playing undefeated Wimbledon next coach Wheelhouse used some great tactics and Ipswich took the lead with Sexton scoring 2 in quick succession. Wimbledon came back fighting and converted two penalty corners to level things up. Great work rate by forwards Kate Wingar, Scott and India Goodman ensured no way through for Wimbledon and with 5 minutes to go Dunnett scored from a PC. The experience of Kat Blake and Kristine Ayling in defence kept Wimbledon at bay and Ipswich won 3-2.

The final game of the weekend was against Bedford. Ipswich once more went behind but Ipswich won a PC and Wheelhouse converted. Next up it was Ayling to score and then Wheelhouse got her second of the game. Bedford fought back & scored 2 quick goals. Scott though scored once more to make it 4-2 but 2 late goals by Bedford meant that it ended as a disappointing draw.

Happily for Ipswich Trojans then beat Wimbledon and Ipswich finished in 3rd, to qualify for the promotion weekend on the 20th January.
