Ipswich hobble over the line at Newmarket
Injured defender scores superb (lucky) winner
When you score your first goal for a hockey club it is hard to write the match report and yet remain objective. However when that winning goal was a total miss-hit that bobbled over the GK it is a little bit easier. Still as my old man used to say "look in the score-book".
Ipswich struggled to put away Newmarket despite scoring with their first attack and looking pretty secure when we could be bothered to look after the ball. In the first minute of the game Greg broke down the right before storming into the D and placing the ball past the young NHC keeper; We then decided to not bother attacking for a bit allowing NHC a series of PCs before the ball was run out of defence by yours truly, slipped to Greg who then put a delicious ball onto Steve's stick 1m from goal. A 16 yard hit ensued.
In the second half we continued to look dominant through Steve and James W in midfield until firstly Sampo pulled up lame and then an innocuous sprint led to the second defensive injury in 5 minutes from which Newmarket grabbed an (almost) deserved equaliser. From there the game rather descended into farce with neither team looking bothered to string together any quality at all although there was time for Steve to have a 2 minute rest for actually not disputing one of the umpire's calls. Eventually a Newmarket defensive error allowed a sight of goal and whilst it would be nice to say the ball was roofed into the net, sadly it only dribbled past the goalkeeper to the embarrassment of the GK and the scorer.
Ipswich held on with a degree of comfort thanks to Ant, Langers and Ed at the back, with the final whistle coming as a bit of a relief due to the dross that had been on show.
