IRLAM FAIL TO TAKE THEIR CHANCES

A 56th minute penalty, converted by Wigan Robin Park no9 Andy Simm proved to be the only goal of the game at the Robin Park Arena on Saturday, a result that sends IRLAM FC down to 16th place in NWCFL Div One as the Silver St side again paid a high price for failing to convert a host of chances presented to them throughout the afternoon.
Irlam, without their two regular forwards in position for the fixture would rely on promising youngster Karl Cassell alongside Dean Burgess who is more effective in his regular midfield role. However, with Wigan having displayed similar form to Irlam in the lead up to the game it was anyone’s guess what the result would be on 90 mins.
An early free kick from Irlam centre half Ryan Ledson forced Wigan keeper Oleski into a fingertip save, a chance that was followed up soon after when Jordan Smith put Irlam skipper Steve Mills through on goal, only for Mills’s shot to lack conviction as the scores remained level.
Ledson was in again on 35 mins, connecting with an inswinging cross from Ben Christopher only for the Irlam no6 to head over the Wigan bar.
Last chance of the half again came Mills’s way, again an inswinging ball into the box from Christopher doing real damage only for Mills to head over as the first half ended 0-0 despite Irlam’s dominance.
Irlam were quick out of the blocks in the 2nd half, and just two minutes into the restart a low cross in from the right from Mooney found Burgess unmarked in the Wigan penalty area only for Irlam’s makeshift forward to scoop the ball over the bar from six yards out and sum up Irlam’s current plight.
Irlam full back played Burgess in again soon after, a half chance that went begging as Irlam put real pressure on the home side.
However, despite Irlam having the lion’s share of possession, the game was turned on its head in the 56th minute when Wigan striker Simm pulled a long ball down in the Irlam area, Irlam keeper Lee White’s attempt at winning the ball off Simm led to the no9 going to ground for the award of the softest of penalties, the Wigan striker sufficiently recovered to step up and convert the spot kick to take a one goal lead.
Following the goal, Irlam continued to press in search of at least an equaliser, but notable chances from Hutchinson, heading goalwards, and Mills who was through in the dying minutes of the game, a shot that was collected by the Wigan keeper, the Irlam side were left once again to taste defeat in a game that they should have taken something out of, and probably should have won at a canter.
IRLAM FC are at home this coming Saturday when they play Division One newcomers Barnton FC, the Cheshire based side currently sitting in seventh place in NWCFL DIV ONE. Kick off at Silver St is 3pm.
