Boss Lady happy with first year in charge ahead of tough Richmondshire visit

WORLD Cup Winner Tamara Taylor is pleased with her first year in charge of Jarrovians and feels the club are heading in the right direction.

It was one year ago this week that the England International took charge of her first training session at Lukes Lane and since then the Robin Hood sponsored side have made huge leaps on and off the pitch.

They finished bottom of the heap last season and despite being in the bottom two again this year the results and performances have been much better.

She said: “From the results it has definitely been a big turnaround. We’ve already won a game; we’ve already scored more tries in the first few games than we did in the whole of last season so a massive improvement. I know the boys are now really frustrated to be losing games rather than just frustrated in general so that’s a massive positive.

“There have been massive improvements especially from some of the younger boys that were around towards the end of last season and now they are really getting into men’s rugby and senior rugby and are now shining. They just fit into the team completely. They don’t look like they are young for the squad.”

It’s not just in the first team where the improvements have been made. Across the club there are more numbers at training and on a Saturday resulting in games for the seconds team. And they have responded with two wins from the previous three games this month.

“It’s awesome,” said Taylor. “The fact that we’ve had 40-odd players available on the same day, at the same time is massive and this season we’re able to name a starting team for the firsts and a squad for the seconds and everyone has turned up and has bought into the fact that selection is there for a reason and people are coming to training. Numbers at training have been great, even though it was blowing a hurricane on Tuesday there was still 20 people there so that’s good.

“We said we were going to have four games, have a little chat and see what we need to change going forward. But I think we are where we need to be.”

She will be hoping to continue that improvement with a visit to Richmondshire, a notoriously tough place to get a result.

And they will be without a number of players, with the likes of Brian Shaw and Joe Riley unavailable. However flanker Scott Oliver is available again after missing the last two weeks and they are hopeful on the fitness of Lewis Holman.
