THE firsts return to action this week with captain Martin Flett looking forward to a very entertaining game against near neighbours Washington.

The game has become the Robin Hood sponsored side’s derby fixture and Flett thinks with both teams on an upward path, it promises to be the game of the weekend.

Jarrovians lie in tenth position with Washington two places above them and both teams have already surpassed their points total from last season.

Flett said: “It’s going to be a good game. Very challenging, both teams have improved a lot from last season. Washington have had a good run but we’ve had some good results and I’m really interested to see what the outcome is at the end of the day. It’s going to be a tough physical encounter which it always is when we play Washington. It’s the derby for us now with the College going up and I think the boys will be up for it on both sides and both teams will be looking to get that win.”

Jarrow lost 57-19 last time out to Seghill but had the luxury of coach statistics compiled by coach Tamara Taylor to fall back on and Flett believes this is another thing that has helped with the club’s improved year.

He said: “The result didn’t go the way we wanted against Seghill but viewing the statistics after the game and analyzing it I think we had a lot more possession, we won a lot more lineouts, a lot more scrums but we just weren’t clinical enough and give them too much space on the ball. But we know what went wrong and we know how to improve that going forward and training this last few weeks has been great.”

Focus over November has switched between both the first and second team and this run of games for the development squad has left the selection committee with some tough decisions. Flett however wouldn’t have it any other way.

He said: “It makes it harder obviously because of the competition for places, especially in some of the pivotal positions. But it’s good to see the youngsters coming through. There’s a lot of young talent here who are performing really highly for the seconds and looking to push for a first team spot, which is fantastic to see. But it does make it difficult for us to pick a side when we learn the availability of the lads because there are so many players who can perform in this team at the moment.

“For the club though it’s absolutely fantastic. We’ve got a group of lads who are just willing to play at any level, they just want to do well for the club as a whole so it is excellent and certainly the best position we’ve been in for the last few years.”

The seconds will continue their development when they also line up against Washington at Lukes Lane.

Both games kick off at 2.15pm.
