Gosforth Park

The first day of spring 18 saw the newly formed Jarrovians under 11’s perform for the first time in the black and amber at the Newcastle Falcons Rugby tournament and WOW did they all impress the watching fans
The first game was a scintillating display from everyone as they took on a hard working side from Wigton in the Lake District. Straight from the kick off Ben McLoud and Joe Ford took the ball from the opposition, between them they laid the ball back for a busy Evan Clough who quickly passed it out to Charlie Morrison who danced passed a defender before popping the ball to Oliver Lowery who charged forward, after a tackle he was able to lay the ball back for Charlie Whittle who picked up from the back of the ruck and made a smart pass to Joe Ford who in turn saw the opportunity to release Thomas Whittle who was charging through the centre. The pass to him was perfect and Thomas cut through the opposition like a warm knife through melting Nutella to score a brilliant try Next up came Alex Perry, he caught the ball cleanly from the restart, using his gazelle like pace he ran through two tackles and then darted down the wing leaving all in his wake to score a great individual try. Wigton soon tired partly due to the pace and endeavour of Jarrovians and also the long early drive from the west side of the country. Jarrovians cranked up the work rate with another three tries from the flying full back Perry and a further one from the powerful running Thomas Whittle, not to be outdone by his loving brother, Charlie got on the score sheet along with Joe Ford.
The second match was a different challenge, playing against a strong, powerful and talented Horden and Peterlee team. Jarrovians struggled to contain the Horden centre and their silky strong running flanker who scored five tries between them. This was a match about character and the Jarra lads showed bucket loads of it. Every one of our boys showed passion and commitment by responding positively and tirelessly to the Horden battering ram, coming off at full time with their heads held high even though disappointed.
They say the measurement off character is not how you fall but how you pick yourself back up. Jarrovians had the perfect opportunity to do that against an experienced, skilled and large Scarborough Rugby team. Both well matched but it was Jarrovians who came out top with two tries, one apiece from the Whittle brothers Charlie and Thomas and an excellent all round performance from the whole team
As they headed into the fourth and final game, a rematch against Wigton you could see the camaraderie develop, a huddle before the game showed the steely determination to play as a team, win lose or draw. The game ended three tries to nil for Jarrovians, Wigton defended brilliantly but Perry, Lowery and Charlie Whittle got over the line for a comfortable third and final victory on the day.
A great start to the teams adventure in the Jarrovians colours and one which we all very proud to see. Each game saw many super individual performances but the one that stuck out was the Team performance, supporting each other, protecting each other and playing for each other. We all look forward to continued success and enjoyment. Coach Justin commented I am very proud of what the lads achieved today, they showed that they have the talent, skill and most importantly the right attitude to be fantastic rugby payers, we will continue to work hard and look to enjoy every minute we play rugby and thank you to all the parents and family and friends who came along to support the team.
