First team get off to a flyer!!
So after a mixed bag of results in preseason the new season was FINALLY upon us and as expected with the 6.15pm kick off away to Penley this ruled out a number of players. However, up stepped Colts players Ieuan Jones, Llion Drake and Nathan Brookfield straight into the start XI….and they did not disappoint.
Within the starting XI we also gave competitive debuts in Johnstown colours to Malcolm Mbako, Richard Jones and young defender Callum Roberts.
Kick off….in particular Johnstown fashion we didn’t seem to be able to get going and wasted the little possession we had. To be fair to Penley their lads seemed fired up for the game and seemed to be winning the first, second and third ball, much to manager Paolo Melacrinis’ anger. Penley continued to dominate the first half with the taller players becoming a threat from set pieces and all aerial battles. And finally the half time whistle….. 0-0 quite a dismal start to the season.
Second half….Some stern words from Melacrinis seemed to get the lads up for it second half and it could not have started any worse, a mix up in defence give Penley a needless corner, which would subsequently see Penley take the lead. Jordan Cartwright of Penley whipped the ball in near post and defender Steffan Evans-Hughes who came off the post seen a rebound off the post hit his leg and trickle into the net. 1-0 Penley.
A change was needed and Melacrinis barked his orders and withdrew Evans-Hughes and Llion Drake for Ben Price and Ryan Masterson and a reshuffle to 3-5-2 gave a more attacking threat to the team. Richard Jones moved into the hole whilst Dewi Reeves moved to RWB. And within 7/8 minutes the switch paid off as Mally Mbako saw himself through on goal with the goalkeeper charging out at him, his composure was second to none as he took it past the goalkeeper put it on to his right foot (so he didn’t miss with his left) and slotted it into the empty net. 1-1 GAME ON!!
The second half didn’t go without Penley having their chances, they were denied by great goalkeeping by Andy Zulu who saved from point blank with his feet and what would have been a goal of the season contender from their tall number 10 who chested the ball and nailed the volley on the turn against cross bar!
But despite those chances it was Johnstown who would turn the game around and grab the win. Our second goal came from some amazing footwork from Ieuan Jones on the left hand side who left three defenders for dead and crossed the ball for Dewi Reeves to poke home from two yards out. 2-1 Johnstown.
And to see off the game and probably the best goal of the game saw Richard Jones read a bobble and hit a 25-yard screamer into the bottom corner! 3-1
Man of the match Nathan Brookfield.
