Over the weekend of 25-26th November the rugby playing nations of the Caribbean convened in Mexico for the Rugby Americas North 7s Championships, the prize for winning it qualification for four prestigious world rugby tournaments:-
- The Hong Kong 7s (April 2018)
- The Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia (April 2018)
- The Rugby World Cup 7s in San Francisco, USA (July 2018)
- The Central American & Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia (July-Aug 2018)
One of those countries competing for these various prizes was Jamaica and amongst their number were King Prawns co-captain and King's Rugby full-back Gareth Stoppani and his fellow Prawn Marcus Webber.
In their day 1 pool games the 'Reggae Crocs' overcame the Dominican Republic 26-7 and Bermuda 35-0 to secure their place in the second round of pool games on Day 2. Two more victories followed as the Cayman Islands were beaten 19-7 then hosts Mexico 26-12. Together those results meant Jamaica advanced to the final versus Guyana and after a match of much drama Jamaica trailed until in the very last play of the tournament captain Conan Osborne crossed for a converted try which saw the lead change hands for a final, crucial, time as the island side won 28-24.
Everyone at King's Rugby wants to say a huge well done to Gareth, Marcus and the rest of the Jamaica playing and coaching staff on a brilliant achievement and to wish the boys all the best for a busy year of 7s in 2018!!!
