Salute To The Old Boys

Although KCS Old Boys has been mentioned on numerous occasions in Rugby World over the years (most recently twice on one page in March 2014), it is perhaps not widely known that the club was called out by name in the first ever edition 55 years ago.

Contained in that October 1960 issue was a feature entitled 'Salute to the Old Boys' penned by no less than esteemed sports writer EW 'Jim' Swanson, himself an old boy of Cranleigh school.

He writes...

"London day schools are automatically best placed to run a thriving old boys club, and most of them have tried, generally with success, to do so. St Pauls, Whigift, U.C.S., K.C.S, Haberdashers and Rutlish come into this category..."

and concludes by saying...

"...so long as they can continue to inspire in their members those same virtues of loyalty, enthusiasm and good fellowship which have held them together for so long, the future of the established clubs should be secure. It is perhaps the best thing about Rugby football...that it caters for all sorts of conditions of men, irrespective of background, creed or class...There is room for everyone, and not least those for those who have contributed as much to the story as the "Old Boys"."
