More Bandages Please…

2XV winning streak keeps limping along.

With TJ retiring his reporters pen, Mike Hill struggling to see round his rearranged nose and Lorcan O'Duffy having his head down in the scrum, it falls back to me to pen the 2XV match report.

Bec OB were clearly concerned about how strong the King's team might be with recent results a cause for concern. Even the referee was worried the game might be one sided. The King’s team was still strong but not as strong as in recent weeks and Bec perhaps afforded them too much respect and, coupled with injuries both before and during the game, made for a good contest.

James Shaw and Neil Williams started with injuries and a big knock to the knee of Greig Blackie in the first few minutes slowed him down all game. However worse injuries to Mike Beale’s knee and Felix Golding’s achilles meant Greig played the whole game when Shawsey’s back gave out after 60 minutes. We hope all the injuries get better soon especially Felix whose Achilles sounds nasty and Mike whose knee was twisted but hopefully was not too badly.

Anyhow back to the game. Bec started well. An easy penalty was missed and when eventually King’s got the ball it looked like they would make good ground as Bec scrambled to defend. However a wayward pass from MOM Brook Wannop was seized on by Bec and their winger ran well to open the scoring.

For the rest of the half King’s dominated the Bec team and accumulated points. Neil Williams, despite his broken finger, opened King’s scoring by pouncing on a loose ball after a scrum near Bec’s line. He added the conversion. A penalty by Neil followed to take the score to 10 – 5. It was joked on the touchline he was going for one of every score and he duly tried to oblige with a drop goal but missed. Another penalty completed the first half score of Bec 5 King’s 13.

With the second half downhill King’s expected to win the game well and soon scored a break away try by Mike Beale with Neil adding the conversion. A fairly dour passage of play followed with King’s refusing to play the pitch and wind advantage. When eventually they kicked to the corner a good driving maul ended with Paul Calaminus over the line to record a front row try. Again Neil converted to keep his 100% record… if you don’t count the fluffed drop goal attempt. 27 to 5 and about 20 minutes left.

King’s wheels then began to come off. Mike Beale made another great break but the horrid unexpected tackle from behind injured his knee. Then Shawsey’s back gave up and then poor Felix Golding, on for only a few minutes, hurt his Achilles. We hope it’s not ruptured completely and we will know soon. He is in a cast for now.

With a few other King’s players limping Bec scored two forward dominated tries as they battered the King’s line. Luckily there was only a small amount of time left. Another 5 minutes and Bec could have won. Three tries each but 12 points from the boot of Neil Williams gave King’s the win.

Five from five for King’s and top of the league, Some tough games to come so we need everyone to be available to cover the injuries that are inevitably building up. This week away at Mayfair Occies for the league and cup double header, 1pm ko at Barn Elms.
