A wonder strike from Chris Melsa ensured that the Penguins began their title defence with a win, despite some wasteful finishing.

Starting their campaign a week later than most clubs, the Penguins hoped to build on their impressive achievements in 2012-2013 with a win against Ipswich Thistle.

The starting line-up had a familiar feel to it, with only Eley and Smith missing from the squad that was consistently selected towards the end of the previous season. Starting in a 4-1-4-1 formation, the Penguins aimed to control possession from the off but found the bobbly pitch difficult to overcome and it was Thistle who started in a more assured manner.

With few chances being taken at the back, both sides struggled to make inroads, although a surging run from Dan Middleditch ended with the left back shooting well off target. Thistle's response was a header over from a corner, but in truth the only man who looked likely to supply a moment of magic was Jason Ramsey, who continually threatened down the right.

After the tepid opening 45, the second half began with a much more open feel. With the wind now at their backs, the Penguins poured forwards and immediately carved out two excellent opportunities. Both Scott Ramsey and James Melsa eventually fired wastefully over following flowing moves as Kesgrave's frustrations in front of goal continued. Still looking secure in defence, the Penguins continued to push forward, with both Woolnough and Dan Middleditch joining Ramsey in positive breaks down the left-hand side that saw dangerous balls delivered across the box but no finishing touch.

With Kesgrave looking bereft of a killer instinct around the box it was left to central midfielder Chris Melsa to break the deadlock from well outside it as he captured a loose ball and cannoned a crisp, rising drive into the top corner - leaving the Thistle goalkeeper rooted. It was a truly outstanding strike fit to win any game, although how the lead wasn't added to is anyone's guess.

One big chance came and went for Thistle as Cole got in a tangle on the corner of the box and the visitors' striker cut in to fire narrowly wide. After that, substitute Jason Middleditch went close on occasions, before Jason Ramsey saw a driven cross shot well turned behind.

Ultimately Kesgrave looked unlikely to surrender their advantage though and went on to secure a clean sheet and 1-0 win that sets them up for the season ahead
