Colts v Wellesbourne 01.04.12
For our final game with DKs we hosted Wellesbourne at Kidderminster. We had both suffered heavy defeats to them earlier in the season so were not expecting much from the game.
After the first 12 minutes it was looking like another thrashing after they ran 4 tries in, taking a 26 point lead. It was at this point that we woke up and started playing. The rest of the first half was all ours and we managed to claw back 17 points before Wellesbourne got a lucky break when a missed knock on by the ref let them run in a try just before the whistle. Half time score 17-33.
Second half saw some of the best rugby the lads have played all season with Sam Taylor and James Cooper both scoring tries. We very nearly snatched the game at the end but Wellesbourne just about hung on. Final score was 34-38 but we came away with 2 bonus points. This means we took 2nd place in the revised league behind Wellesbourne. The league was split in January with the top six teams competing in one and us with the bottom six teams.
What started off as a very bad season due to a small squad to start with and then having players leave has turned out rather good. DKs were in the same position as us and the merge meant we could both keep the lads playing rugby. Had that not of happened a lot from both clubs would have probably packed in completely. We have had some games where we have only just fielded a team between us and without the merge the games would have been forfeited.
I have been managing the colts for two years now. My aim was to fill the gap between junior and senior rugby and keep the lads playing till they felt ready to play in the seniors. Without it a lot of 17-19 year olds would just pack the game in for good. From the last two seasons I have seen quite a few starting to play for the seniors. From last season I have seen eight colts players on the senior team sheets. From this season another nine have already started playing and hopefully the remaining U19s will take the step up. Our U18s will continue playing colts next season along with the U17s who will be coming up to colts. I have watched a few of their games this season and they have a good squad. With Stu Eades taking on the colts coach post for next season things are looking good. I look forward to working with both of them. Everyone involved with the colts and Stu know that I have been asking for him since I took the managing post on. I also look forward to working with the new senior set up to make the transition for the colts as smooth as possible. We have a good U16s coming up too so the next three years for the club is looking bright.
