Cosmos rue missed opportunities in East London

Cosmos rue missed opportunities in East London

On Saturday Kilburn Cosmos travelled across the city to East London for their opening league game of the London NW3 season against Old Streetonians. After a pre-season which saw them win 1 and lose 1 the Cosmos were confident of kicking off their season in a more positive fashion to 2016/17 but ultimately were made to rue missed opportunities.

The game kicked off in good conditions at Hackney Marshes with Cosmos kicking deep in to the Old Streetonians half, winning the turnover and regaining possession, however it was shortly after kick off that their first mistake was made, a forward pass resulting in a scrum to the home side. This set the tone for much of the opening 20 minutes with both sides compounding mistakes resulting in a very disjointed game.
This was exemplified when 10 minutes in to the first half Kilburn won a penalty at the breakdown, kicked deep in to the oppositions half and lost their own ball at the lineout. Easing the pressure off Old Streetonians in the danger area and allowing them to clear effectively.

One positive of the first half for Kilburn was the defensive effort, after some superb phase play from the home side they found themselves inside the Cosmos 22, only for Kilburn no. 12 Phil Cook to commit and execute a devastating hit on his opposite number. With the ball spilt flanker Aly Bursey put his body on the line to regain the ball and possession, easing the pressure of the Cosmos defence.

It cannot be said that Kilburn did not have their chances, winger Ali Brace sprinted down the touchline for 40m homing in on the opposition 22 only to be brought down by a high tackle. From the resulting penalty and kick to touch Kilburn once again committed mistakes in a key area of the field, losing their own lineout 5m out from the try line allowing Old Streetonians to once again alleviate the pressure.

It was at around the 30 minute mark that the most positive aspect of the game came in to play for Kilburn, with their scrum operating at a very high level. Led by Man of the Match Kane Edgeworth at prop Kilburn were able to secure their own ball and turnover a high percentage of the oppositions, a combination of power and technique allowing them to push their opponents clear at the scrum. Yet despite the clear upper hand in this area as well as some strong carries by forwards Obi Ajufo, Caleb Wolfeys and Andrew Brotherston, the Cosmos were continually made to rue mistakes made in the opposition half time and time again.

Kilburn did gain 3 points from the boot of Captain Fraser Hutt but ultimately the penalty count was too high for them to build on this. Just before half time Old Streetonians gained a penalty 30m out from the Kilburn line, instead of taking the points they tap and go and with the Kilburn defence lacking concentration allowing an easy run though to score under the posts. A successful conversion brought it to 7-3 and to half time.

The second half brought much of the same frustration for Kilburn as the first. The scrum continued to dominate but ultimately the penalty count and number of mistakes proved too high.

With a very disjointed game, as well as the weather conditions changing dramatically, it was difficult for either team to get a foot hold and build phases. Kilburn’s back 3 made some fantastic individual breaks but were ultimately let down by mistakes in the oppositions half. Due to the dominance of their scrum in the second half Kilburn were able to dominate possession but ultimately could not make it count, additionally due to the penalty count Old Streetonians were awarded many shots at 3 points but ultimately they could not capitalise either.

With the game finishing at 7-3 Kilburn left the field incredibly disappointed knowing they had not performed as they did last season. They take away a bonus point from their first game of the season but know that they could, and should, of come away with more.
