On a cold and wet November day the Killie Polar Bears recorded their first league win of the season in a hard and evenly fought game against Annan.
Before the game both sides joined with their first XV counterparts for a minutes silence, both to remember the fallen of conflicts past and to honour a great servant to Kilmarnock RFC Tom Meehan.
Once the whistle went both teams scorned the difficult conditions and tried to play rugby, although the game was punctuated by the referees whistle on many, many occasions, both sides kept their frustrations to themselves and endeavoured to produce line breaks. Due to some good hits and also due to the conditions these were not forthcoming until the 30th minute where after a good initial break by the midfield the ball was recycled to the evergreen Andy Lees, who broke through the Annan defence to score near to the posts. Young Willie Bark proved that the fruit never falls far from the tree and sclaffed the conversion! 5 – 0 to Kilmarnock at half time.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first, with good enterprise shown by both sides, but mistakes and the sound of the whistle stopped many moves to the puzzlement of both sides.
With eight minutes left on the clock an Annan move went through the hands of the backs and with a forward pass of Tom Brady proportions to the wing, for which Kilmarnock waited in vain for the whistle, Annan recycled smartly and scored between the sticks. The try was converted and at this stage another close defeat looked to be on the cards.
The Polar Bears rallied, and perhaps driven by a sense of injustice made their way to the opposition 22 where they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts. The coach breathed a sigh of relief until Tom ‘Maverick’ Stewart decided to run the ball. The ball was knocked on and the game appeared lost.
With full time approaching the cold, wet, exhausted Polar Bears lifted themselves into one last attack. They made inroads with good close support and aggressive running with the back row prominent as they had been the entire match and caused the Annan defence to once more go offside at the breakdown. Step forward Tom Stewart who chose on this occasion to take the more difficult kick. The veteran centre calmly slotted between the sticks.
8-7 Kilmarnock. The referees whistle followed and a victory in a game that was a credit to two sides that kept playing rugby in a positive fashion despite the conditions.

The joy at winning was however tempered by the news that winger Jamie Houston had sustained a broken leg during the game. We wish him all the best for a quick recovery and return to the ranks.
