King Cross Park Under 10’s Vs Wibsey Warriors 10/03/12
KXP under 10’s kicked off the new summer season playing host to an unknown quantity in the form of a big Wibsey Warriors side.
In a game where defences ultimately dominated, it was Kingcross who started brightest with strong running from Jack Brooke and Ben Hellowell setting up field position. Good handling from George Gledhill and Will Hulme stretched the Wibsey defence, giving space for Aaron Brook to dash for the corner, only to find himself tackled in to touch just short of the corner flag. This set the tone for the first half with defences on top and both teams playing good disciplined rugby.
With half time looming and Kingcross applying more pressure to the Wibsey line, an intelligent last tackle kick and chase from Aaron Brook forced a repeat set of six from where Luke Latham showed good pace and power to go in at the corner for a try which Latham successfully converted himself.
The second half commenced with Kingcross regaining possession straight from the kick off after a clever kick from Jack Brooke. Powerful drives from Tom Inman and Niall Green took the ball close to the Wibsey line where Hellowell sneaked over from acting halfback. Hellowell adding the extras to put Kingcross two scores in front.
As the second half progressed Kingcross handled the big Wibsey pack well, but when a rare mistake gifted Wibsey the ball close to the line, Kingcross were unable to hang on and Wibsey managed to get themselves on the score sheet with a converted try of their own.
This turned out to be a blip in an otherwise outstanding defensive performance and it was Park who went on to grind out the hard yards up the slope, setting up position for what turned out to be the try of the game. With Gledhill held up just short of the line, the ball was swept from right to left, passing through the hands of Conner Bateman, Hulme, Latham and Inman before reaching Niall Green. Green floated a long pass over an opponent to Aaron Brook who showed great footwork to step inside three players for a converted try.
On the whole a game played in great spirit with an excellent defensive effort from two well disciplined sides.
