Well we went to Barrow in the FA Cup again like every year with a depleted squad, the result was a correct one with barrow winning 3-2, and we nearly snatched a draw at the death with a goal line clearance from Brett Darby stopping us gaining a much undeserved draw. They worked far harder than we did and doing so kept the ball better than us. So again we fall in the opening rounds due to not having the full squad to pick from. The Tuesday saw us at home to Nottingham side Dunkirk, who finished above us last season, with a home win each to both sides. Dunkirk are a very pacey side who play nice football, so a good game was expected and a hard one too. The game started at a good pace with both sides trying to play. Kirby took the lead very early on when Luke Plummer played in Brett Darby to fire into the far corner of the net. The lead was very short lived though after a nice passage of pressure, Dunkirk worked an opening for Anthony Gregory to equalize. Match on now and both sides attacking with vigor. Kirby started to get on top and Stu Verrall broke clear and hit the post with the keeper well beaten in the 18th minute. In the 25th minute after a great cross the Dunkirk keeper made a great save from a Stu header, and an even better one while on the floor from the rebound shot from Brett Darby. Kirby regained the league in the 36th minute when Tom Hill scored with an overhead kick. Half time Kirby 2 Dunkirk 1
The second half was played out in much the same as the first end to end, both sides looking to take the game to each other. After another good spell of pressure by Kirby the game was wrapped up when Stu Verrall picked the ball up and went by one man in midfield and fired a great shot into the far corner from about 25 yards. 3 points on the board for Kirby, keeping us just behind the unbeaten Loughborough University, and Westfields, at this early stage in the season. Saturday sees us go to Birmingham to play Boldmere a team we have yet to beat. Monday see’s us at Coleshill where we had a great battling win last season.
