Wildcats cruise to first league win and...
..we actually score a header from a cross!!
So we finally got our first league win which was good to get out of the way, this sees us move up to 5th in the table. The girls gave a good performance, although I do feel there is much more to come as I don't think we've hit our best yet.
I think there was some good individual performances to highlight... Katy Byrave once again showed us the damage she cause teams on the right wing and bossed it. She can be proud of some great assists, two to note was one that actually came off the keeper for an own goal and a fantastic 'messy' type run with a perfectly weighted ball for Bella to latch on the end of for her 2nd of the game!
Lottie give another fine display after a struggling with a slippery ball to concede. It was good to see her strength and character to keep going and make a string of good saves on what was a problematic surface to play on for a keeper.
Jodie Anderton gave another solid performance as right back, there's not much that will get past her with great reading of the game and knowing when to press, tackle and drive forward with the ball.
But for me, it was the two main learning objectives in training that finally paid off...
First we were practicing getting our shots off quicker just outside the area, all the girls have wonderful techniques and strength to ping a ball beautifully which we've seen time and time again in training. A ball from Katy gave Bell time to shift to her left foot and hit one (perhaps just inside the area) to see it float over the keeper and hit the back of the net. As mentioned, this is a huge strength we have in the team and we need to use it more.
But all the plaudits must go to Gracie Manning who, after all the years I've been coaching girls football, finally scored a header from a cross! I've lost count of the amount of times where Katy has sent a cracking ball in just begging for one of the girls to get their head on it. This was something that we worked on in training and to see it come off was brilliant... What a cross! What a header! What a goal! Well done Gracie for the bravery and vision to meet that cross (and katy for the cross)... I can eventually retire from coaching a happy man.
So well done girls, there's more to come from you as a collective, but we can go into our next fixture confidence high.
Man of the Match: Jodie Anderton - had that left winger in her pocket!
